Sunday Inspiration: What Does Total Health and Well-Being Really Mean?

Are you living in such a way that you are nurturing your total self? Have you learned how to nourish your spirit, feed your soul and care for your body, promoting total health and well-being?

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” That scripture is found in III John 2.

I love that verse and it brings to mind that God wants us to be prosperous in all areas of our lives. So what makes up the whole person?

We are a spirit—we have a soul—and we live in a body.

As a Christian, my faith in God is the central factor which propels my life forward. You may not have any type of faith in God or other religion, but this information is still something that can be applied to your life.

The most important aspect in your life is your spirit—you are your spirit.

How do you feed your spirit?

As a Christian, I feed my spirit by reading God’s word, spending time in prayer and taking the time out of my day to praise and worship God.

If you are starving your spirit, your soul will not be doing well either. If you’re not feeding your soul, you will not be doing your body any favors either.

What is your soul and how can you feed it? Your soul is your heart, mind and emotions. Are you daily feeding your heart with self-encouragement? Have you surrounded yourself with like-minded people who are supporting your dreams and not dashing your hopes?

It’s so important to have encouragement from those close to you and be an encourager to others.

Are you reading daily and trying to keep your mind engaged with new ideas and always learning? Do you have a handle on your emotions and know how to vent your frustrations in a healthy way?

We all know what our body is…that’s the only part of our three-part being that we actually see each day.

Are you getting daily exercise? If you don’t have the time to go to the gym each day, at least try to walk every day and stay active throughout the day. We need to eat healthy and take vitamins and have a good diet.

All of this information seems like a no-brainer, but we don’t always follow through with each step…me included—I’m definitely preaching to myself here, too.

So, how do we maintain total health and well-being in our daily lives? What’s the driving motivation?

The driving motivation should be that when your spirit and soul are prospering; they naturally pull your body into place for a healthier you.

It’s a simple fact of nature—get two of your parts in line and you’ll automatically pull the third along with the others.

So, that stands to reason, that if you are headed off the deep end—into irrational thoughts and behaviors, or unhealthy living—the two strongest parts of yourself will pull the third part along. If you’re flesh or body is ruling the roost, then your soul has most likely been in cahoots with your body and your spirit is suffering.

That’s why it’s so vitally important to nourish your spirit first and foremost. Then you’ll be in the right focus and frame of mind to keep your soul in line and then bringing your body into total health and wellness.

This journey towards TOTAL health and wellness begins with a decision.

You need to decide that you want to acknowledge that you are a three part being. You need to make a decision to have daily discipline and you need to decide to try your best each day to make a difference for good in your life and the lives of others.
