The Book Corner: Genres

Genres

by Babs Hightower

For those of us that like to read or just those starting out, have you noticed how the genres have changed over the years? You might be amazed at the various sub genres that are available. Some might ask what is a “real” genre? According to wikipedia and the dictionary, genre is a label that characterizes what a reader can expect in a work of literature.

Some of the main fiction genres today are:

• Comedy

• Drama

• Horror

• Realistic

• Romantic

• Satire

• Tragedy

• Tragicomedy

• Fantasy

• Mythology

The main genre that is in high demand at this moment is Romance. The most popular of the sub genre is YA romances. There are so many niches to choose from that makes it the most popular. Mysteries in a close second with thrillers and cozies we can see why.

We know there are a lot of great books out there to read. I like romances and mystery but I like cozy mysteries, western romance, christian romance and others. So where do theses books come into play? We go to sub genres which are a sub category within a particular genre. There are so many out there we won’t be able to cover all of them but we can give you an idea of what to look for.

Romance has a lot of sub genres. A few are Paranormal, Western, Contemporary, Historical, Sweet, Erotica, Chick-Lit, Young Adult and Romantic Suspense. A lot of us probably read romance type books. We like to get away from the real world and relax. It’s nice to read a HEA or Happily Ever After to make you feel good.

Mysteries sub genres are a bit interesting as well. Amateur Detective, Cozy, Historical, Espionage and Classic whodunit.

I don’t care for Horror much but I find they sub genres want to make you read them. Hauntings, Gothic, Comic Horror, Dark Fantasy, Vampires, Zombies, Young Adult,Shifters and Historical.

I won’t go into all the sub genres but this gives you an idea of what is out there. Now that we know what we can find, your choices are endless and if you are like most of us our “TO Be Read” TBR pile grows by leaps and bounds. We will have to live a long time to get everything we want read.

What genre do you like to read? Are there any you don’t care for? Do you think the sub genres are right and what if anything would you add to the groups? Please share your thoughts. We would love to hear from you.
