In my last post, I talked about the many different types of digital marketing. As an author, a customized combination of these will work best for you, depending on your platform, audience, and goals. Knowing what you want to achieve and focusing on that is key to fully utilizing all that digital marketing has to offer. It can be intimidating but the benefits are so very rewarding.

Think Like the Entrepreneur You Are

I’ve said it before, and I shall say it again—authors should consider their work to be a business. That doesn’t mean replace the love, joy, passion, and creativity you feel with hard numbers and bottom lines. It means realizing the potential of your work and the fact that while it’s creative, if you want to sell books, it’s a business. It’s the truth no matter how you cut it! Realizing that and taking it seriously sooner than later will serve you well. And with any business, there are important mechanics at work behind the scenes. These mechanics are what keep you going and attribute to your goals for lasting success. A few key elements are needed to get this going.

  • Consistency

  • Perseverance

  • Teamwork

Remembering That Personal Touch


To get the most out of digital marketing as an author, you first need to understand that your own involvement is key. You don’t have to do everything yourself, but at the same time, you shouldn’t think of it as a hands-off deal. A combination of working with a professional and supplementing with your own efforts will help yield the best results. This is especially useful in social media marketing. You may work with a professional team to help increase your presence through social media marketing, but it is also encouraged to post as well, engaging with your followers and giving that personal touch only you know best.

Tried and True Sticks Like Glue

One of the most important pieces of advice to carry with you is to remain consistent. From your brand, to your image, to the way you present yourself, few things can harm you more than coming across as inconsistent. It damages trust and greatly harms your credibility in the digital world. Reputation is extremely important, so it is crucial to remain aligned when it comes to efforts and presentation. If you make a promise to your readers, it is necessary to follow that through.

For example: telling readers to “stay tuned for weekly news” holds little weight if you provide an update once every three months. Consistent activity is key to success in digital marketing, which is why it is important to stay on top of it. Period.

Keep Going… and Going, and Going…


It should go without saying but when the going gets tough, the tough should get going! (If you visualize the Energizer Bunny, you aren’t far off base). Digital marketing requires hard work and a certain level of patience. Results will come but it doesn’t happen overnight. If you understand that your digital marketing efforts must be continuous and will grow over time, you are already half way there. Many authors become frustrated, hoping to see immediate results with minimal efforts. A quality and well thought out digital marketing plan is needed to take you far and get you where you deserve to be.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Chances are you have heard this saying before. If you take a moment to really think about it, it is beyond true. Unity is what makes a great team stand apart from other teams. Your input and active participation with others will ultimately help you succeed. Another way to bolster digital marketing is to unite with others—join groups, attend conferences, network and connect. Building truly meaningful connections helps you grow your fan base.
