Am I a Bad Christian for Calling Our Magazine, “Pandora’s Box” Gazette?

Am I a Bad Christian for Calling Our Magazine, “Pandora’s Box” Gazette?

By Joanne Troppello

At Pandora’s Box Gazette, we enjoy connecting with our readers. We are open to all opinions that they share. I had a recent experience where a comment from a reader affected me and gave me pause. This reader commented on a column post that I shared to a community I belong to on Google+.

A Word from Joanne

In today’s vlog journal entry, I share a brief message about the philosophy at Pandora's Box Gazette and why we gave our online magazine that name. This video originated after reading a comment from someone who read my recent column: “How Do You Measure Happiness in Your Life?” This person questioned my faith in the Lord since I wrote about being happy when—as he stated, Christians aren’t meant to be happy. They needed to find their joy in the Lord.

I closed my column with the following paragraph:

In Phil. 4:11-13, Paul demonstrates the perspective to be content in all things—true, this is not easy; however, if we base our happiness and joy in our relationship with the Lord or with our faith and not on our circumstances, then our fulfillment will always be brimming with joy. This is a life lesson we all need to re-learn every day and that’s what’s so great about it—that with each new sunrise, comes a new chance to claim that happiness and joy that the Lord wants to bring into our lives.

I suppose this person didn’t read the entire article or maybe misunderstood what I wrote. I agree, that our joy is to be found in the Lord, regardless of our circumstances.

He further detailed that my Christian faith must not be real since I have named our magazine, “Pandora’s Box” Gazette due to the myth of Pandora opening the jar / box and disregarding Zeus’ warning that to do so would unleash evil on mankind.

Of course, I know about this myth. However, I don’t want our magazine to be associated with evil being unleashed on the world. Pandora's Box Gazette is an online hub where readers connect with authors, writers, entrepreneurs, and artists, and get unique views on current events. The name Pandora's Box was chosen because when people read this magazine, we want them to find content that causes them problems in a "good way" that encourages them to think outside the box and learn something new to apply to their lives.
