Columnist Spotlight: Carolyn M. Walker

Columnist Spotlight: Carolyn M. Walker

Today at Pandora’s Box Gazette, we are spotlighting one of our monthly columnists, Carolyn M. Walker. She shares advice for authors on marketing their books. Let’s get to know a little bit more about Carolyn.

Why did you accept the invitation to write for Pandora’s Box Gazette?

I wanted to find a forum where I could share my insights into the marketing aspects of promoting one’s work as an author. I know a lot of authors who are masters of their craft, but when it comes to promoting themselves, they are utterly lost. My background in marketing has given me an advantage and I wanted to share some of what I’ve learned with others.

What is your favorite movie and why do you like it so much?

One of my all-time favorite movies is The Breakfast Club. I have a soft spot for those quirky eighties films that tackle real world issues in a comedic and often thoughtful ways. I love how each of the characters learn from each other which forced them to look at themselves. Coming of age tales are timeless and this is one of my faves. I also love the music!

What has been the most influential book to your life that you’ve ever read?

It’s a classic! The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas has inspired me in so many ways. The multifaceted characters, layers of plot, and theme influenced me to fall in love with the art of true irony in storytelling.

Which social media platform (ex. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ etc.) is your preferred mode of online communication? Do you prefer one over the others for promotion of your work?

I enjoy Facebook for connecting to readers and I love Twitter for quick updates. I’m also becoming more active on Instagram now too. I promote on all of them.

What was your favorite vacation destination and why did you enjoy it?

The beach, specifically West Palm. I love the tropical atmosphere and the lively energy of the area. When I visit, I feel like I’m in paradise.

Where did you travel to on your honeymoon?

My husband and I went on a week-long cruise to the Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico. It was magical! In the Cayman Islands, we snorkeled in some of the clearest waters we had ever seen. (This is before we became certified divers, so I’d love to go back and check it out now!) My favorite part of the trip was visiting the ancient Mayan ruins. We booked a four-hour excursion! To walk on the very ground—such a significant piece of history was amazing! The cliff drop view down to the beach was also nothing short of breathtaking.

On a family vacation, my husband and I visited the Mayan ruins. It was a wonderful excursion. What is your dream vacation travel destination?

Japan. One day. :D

Do you have a hobby? We’d love to hear about it.

I have a thing for crafts. I love recipe scrapbooking and jewelry making (I’m still new at it but I want to start up a beach-inspired accessory line.)

Did you play any sports or belong to clubs in school?

I played girls’ softball from elementary to middle school. In high school I was in a lot of clubs! I was in the drama club, dance, chorus, and orchestra (I played violin). My junior year in high school, I joined the JROTC where I was on the drill team. I was also on the Ironwoman league (for peak physical fitness) and I placed 2nd nationally one year during our summer competition. Sadly, I’m no Ironwoman anymore! :P

Have your kids followed in your footsteps by participating in the same sports/clubs or have they taken on other interests?

My daughter is very artistic! She shares the same love for crafting as I do. But she takes it a step further with sculpting and painting. Sports-wise, she played a couple seasons of soccer but her heart is in dance.

What was the most significant event in your life?

The day I had my beautiful daughter Amber. That day was the greatest day of my life! 😊
