Jo's Journal: Don’t Be Your Own Worst Enemy

Don’t Be Your Own Worst Enemy

by Joanne Troppello

When it comes right down to it, truly the only one stopping yourself from succeeding is you. Now before you all start throwing rotten tomatoes at me, booing me off the soapbox, think for a second. This is life that we’re all living down here. Yes, there are obstacles that come across our pathway each day. It’s a given. However, there are people who are succeeding in business, their careers, and generally speaking…in life. Why are they succeeding and you’re not? What ingredient are you missing that they have?

Now, I’m still among the pack with all of you. I haven’t risen to the highest height of my writing career. I haven’t become an Internet millionaire…yet—but I plan to and I’m going to get there. Why and how do I know this with such certainty? Because as my mom used to say where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Yes, you need hard work and discipline and sometimes being in the right place at the right time in order to succeed—but a huge part of success comes down to you. Do you believe that all your dreams are achievable? You’re going to need a dogged determination to believe in yourself and your dreams if you ever hope to achieve them. You need to be like those Olympic athletes who train hard each day with the hopes that one day they will win Olympic gold. Nothing is going to stop them from persevering each day during training to get at the ultimate goal. You need to channel that same perseverance into your own business acumen.

There will be naysayers who will come your way to try to pull you down. Maybe they just don’t believe in you. Maybe they are jealous you have the drive to succeed. Whatever the reason, you need to put your focus off of them and onto your dreams. As a Christian, I am focused on God’s Word and prayer as encouragers for me. Whatever your faith or lack of religion, you still need to have some sense of belief in something…if you hope to succeed. The one thing that keeps me going every day is the fact that even though it may not seem like it, I know God has a specific plan for my life and He wants the best for me.

Although, it’s not always easy, believing that when the going gets tough. Most of the time, that’s when people quit—they can’t keep up or they are too tired or they don’t think they’re ever going to receive results. Well, do you know how many times I’ve failed at things and various projects? I think many people in my family think I’m crazy, but one of these days and hopefully soon, they’re going to see that I’m not. My pot of gold under the rainbow is just around the corner.

I know it in my heart because it’s a burning desire that I can’t let go of. There are things in my heart and visions I’ve seen of all that God wants to do in my life and my husband’s life. Many of those things will only come about with money. It’s time for the money to come back to people who want to make a difference in the world and help hurting people. Of course, we want to pay off our house and car and someday have our dream house. However, the first thing I’d do when the money comes in is tithe. Even if you’re not a Christian, all the gurus and self-help consultants teach that you need to give in order to receive. That is a Biblical principle. You can never out give God.

So I challenge you to start believing in yourself and all of your dreams. No one can make your dreams come true except you. Are you up for that challenge today?
