Sunday Inspiration: Following Your Dreams Requires Courage

Following Your Dreams Requires Courage

by Joanne Troppello

“A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage.” — Sidney Smith.

What comes to mind when you read that quote?

For me, I think about all the things which I have not had the courage to do in my life. I think about the many hopes and dreams I have, which require much courage—to accomplish and to keep believing until I succeed. How many books could be written which never are written? Is this due to lack of courage or simply procrastination? How many inventions are in the inventor’s mind but do not find their way to an invention for lack of courage? How many dreams are never realized because we are afraid? Are we wasting away our talents?

I have struggled many times in the past with lack of courage. It’s held me back from stepping out in faith and being the vessel which God wants me to be—as He pours out His grace into my life. Lack of courage is no match for the believer who completely abandons fear and trusts in God’s Word. Trusting in God that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us—memorizing this verse and speaking it into my life can counteract the paralyzing effects of a lack of courage…thus helping me to succeed at the dreams God has placed in my heart.

The famous words of Scarlett O’Hara, “after all…tomorrow is a new day” stuck in my mind as soon as I heard them. I need to have courage to believe that no matter what happened yesterday or if today is not going exactly as I planned, I need to keep my chin up and be courageous in my heart because the sun will come up again.

With God, all things are possible.

We may not always feel the courage to keep going when difficulties surround our lives, but that’s when we need to turn our attention onto God and focus on Him. Of course, we should always be looking to His face and not His hands, but many times the difficulties of life throw us off our game.

Life can be hard, but we need to have the courage and faith to believe in a big God who is able. His arm is not too short to save, nor His ear to dull to listen. God hears our every cry, our every prayer. We may not always get the answer we want, but God knows exactly what we need and He will provide each time.

Now, that takes courage—to believe in God’s providence, but that’s also why He provided His Word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. If you have an encouraging story to share about your own life’s journey, please share it with us. We’d love to hear from you. Another way to have courage is to be encouraged by others who have persevered and made it through life’s difficulties.
