Sunday Inspiration: Covered & Kept

Covered & Kept

by Celita Perillo

Helplessness bows me. Helplessness, that wanting to do something to assist, alleviate, relieve, rescue…but being completely blocked from doing so. Helplessness, if not guarded, encouraged, cradled in care, can lead to hopelessness.

It’s interesting that helplessness and hopelessness, depression, anxiety, and panic attacks all stem from and have their roots in FEAR.

All of us are facing life challenges that can feel like tremors, like the rumbling of an oncoming earthquake that’s biding its time to upheave everything.

We, in our family, are facing such a time. A time with so many questions and unknowns that at times the stress almost feels like physical pain; when Faith and Fear wrestle and battle for prominence. But I HAVE to refuse Fear the winning title. I have to use my stubborn will against Fear, and cling to Hope in Jesus, because Fear- that debilitating, suffocating, doubtful, health-hurting kind- is NOT intending to protect me, aid me, keep me from harm, but, rather, eventually it will destroy me, and take me to a very dark place where I’ve been before but will fight to NEVER, NEVER, NEVER return to again.

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8: 37-39)

The Lord reminds us over and over “Do not fear” in His Word, and I have to, moment by moment, pep-talk myself into remembering. Remembering God’s promises. Remembering who I am, who my family is, to Jesus. How He treasures us. Remembering how He knows the numbers of hairs on our heads, the thoughts and feelings we have, the condition of our red and white blood cells, and every aspect of our psychological, physical, and emotional person - To the inner being of our soul.

He has known us from before our birth. He knew us as He was beaten, whipped, mocked, mistreated, and hung on the cross. He knew us as He DIED on the cross so He could CONQUER Death and Hell! He knew us then, knows us now, and is already knowing us in the future- and always.

He HAS got us, our families, our pasts, our presents, and our futures - ALL - in His hands.

We were NEVER promised lives without challenges, but we ARE promised His help, Presence, hope, peace as we go through them.

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

I am, we are, currently in the ebb and flow of challenges, trials, and, even, yes, temptations, but I am seeing glimpses- like the hint of beautiful things passed a curtain being moved by breezes. I don’t see the whole beauty of it, but it makes me want to.

Is it easy holding on to hope and faith when you feel like you cannot see, hear, or know? When Fear keeps threatening? No. But I am moment by moment - daily - trying to surrender to the One who DOES see, hear, and know.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Hold on!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3: 5-6)

Jesus, You see us struggling and hurting. Please help us! Show us Your glory in these dark days, Your power in our weak days, Your love when we are overwhelmed and feeling “done." Help us to surrender to You and trust You even when we don’t see the evidence of things changing for the better. Help us not to succumb to Fear, but to wage war against it with confidence that You have already overcome so we can be victors, too.

Thank You for having ALL of our times in Your hands, that we CAN trust You. Thank You for living in the praises of Your people because in THAT place of praise there IS healing, help, hope, joy, encouragement, strength, restoration, reconciliation. Thank You for loving us so much.

Bless and keep each person who relates to and reads this post. Help us to TRUST in, CLING to, RELY on, BELIEVE in You, Jesus. In Your name we pray, Amen.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” (Numbers 6: 24-26)
