Is Peace That Passes All Understanding Real?

I’ve Experienced it Firsthand – It’s Real

by J.M. Troppello

Have you ever asked yourself that question?

I’ve been a Christian for 33 years. I can testify to the fact that peace that passes all understanding is real. I have experienced God’s peace SO many times in my life.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7, NKJV)

God’s peace has guarded my heart and mind.

Without that peace in my life, I don’t know where I’d be—physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

I’ve had to deal with traumatic experiences in life like growing up in a dysfunctional family environment, dealing with emotional and sexual abuse as a young adult, and having to go through a short sale (the step before you got to a foreclosure) on our home after my husband and I lost our jobs.

I definitely needed God’s peace that passes all understanding in my life during those experiences. Without the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit, I could have turned to a variety of vices like sex, drug, and alcohol as a comfort in my life.

Thankfully, I’d gotten saved at a young age and turned to God each and every time I needed Him.

Yet, that peace that passes all understanding, wasn’t only available to me during the extremely difficult times. It was always ready and available to me every second of my life.

God’s peace is different in varying circumstances.

When you’re in painful situations, it can be the soothing comfort that calms your pain and anxiety. When you’re in happier times, it can be that simple yet beautiful grace that brings joy to your heart.

How to get that peace

Maybe you’re dealing with a difficult situation right now. You’re being tossed about by the enormous waves of turmoil. You think you have nowhere to turn to.

There is hope.

I’m not acting like a snake oil salesman from the Old West days trying to sell you a healing potion.

God’s peace is real.

Yet, there is ONE caveat.

You need to enter into His presence and accept it.

Maybe you haven’t yet experienced God’s gift of salvation. If that’s you, I would encourage you to get a Bible and read through the Gospel of John.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16, NKJV)

If you are saved and are in need of God’s peace, I would encourage you to take some time to yourself. Shut off the TV or radio. Leave your phone, tablet, and laptops in another room. Grab your Bible and read the following passages of scripture:

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.(Phil. 4:4-7, NKJV)

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.4 Trust in the Lord forever, For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength. (Isaiah 26:3-4, NKJV)

Both of these passages of scripture are powerful.

The main idea is that when you focus on your difficulties and problems, you’ll be overwhelmed with anxiety and lack of peace. When you focus on God and His majestic power, you will experience that peace that passes all understanding.

The Takeaway

Don’t allow your problems to overwhelm you. Don’t permit them to steal your joy in the Lord. I can speak from experience. I’ve allowed my circumstances to rob me of invaluable time with the Lord because I was too focused on them and not on Him.

Life is short.

Live life with the peace that only God can give to you.
