Ten Verses to Memorize and Recite – Fear
When You Need to Overcome Fear in Your Life
by Joanne Troppello
Fear can paralyze you into inaction or it can spur you to act. If you allow fear to overwhelm you, it can be difficult to move beyond the severe anxiety in your own strength. However, you are not alone. God wants to help you overcome your fear and trust in Him to cover you with His grace, strength, and peace.
If you’ve ever been oppressed by fear and need to find ways to deal with it in an emotionally and spiritually mature way, consider memorizing scripture verses and then recite them to yourself when those times of intimidation arise. The following ten verses can help you with this.
1. God Will Give You a Sound Mind
This is one of my favorite verses to recite when I am afraid. It’s a simple, yet powerful truth.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” – II Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
2. God Goes with You All the Time
This verse should remind you that you are not alone. God is always with you.
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” – Deut. 31:6 (NKJV)
3. The Lord is My Shepherd
Psalm 23 is one of my favorite Psalms because it shows how God is my Shepherd and He walks with me through every step, even in the valley of the shadow of death.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4 (NKJV)
4. Trust in God When You’re Afraid
This is a great verse to recite when you are afraid. It shows that when you’re fearful, that’s the most important time to trust in God to guide you.
“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?” – Psalm 56:3-4 (NKJV)
5. Don’t Be Dismayed
Again, God is with you wherever you go, so you don’t have to be fearful or discouraged. When you need encouragement through your fear, recite this verse.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
6. God Will Strengthen You
This is another one of my favorite verses that I recite when I’m afraid. I love how this verse ends with a word picture of God holding me in His hand.
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you,I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” – Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)
7. Freedom from Your Fears
This verse has a beautiful message that God will free you from all your fears. Seek Him and He will hear you and give you the comforting touch that you need.
“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.” – Psalm 34:4 (NKJV)
8. God is Your Hiding Place
Imagine for a second that someone broke into your home and meant to do you harm. You’d try to quickly find a place to hide and call 911. Now think about the words in this verse. The Psalmist says that God is his hiding place, and He will preserve him from trouble. Imagine those songs of deliverance surrounding you.
“You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah – Psalm 32:7 (NKJV)
9. There is Safety in the Lord
This is another great verse to recite when you’re fearful. Don’t allow fear to become a snare for you – causing you to react the wrong way or make poor decisions. Trust in God and He will keep you safe.
“The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.” – Proverbs 29:25 (NKJV)
10. Don’t Be Anxious for Anything
This verse tells you not to worry about anything, but to pray about everything. When you pray and give your fears and concerns to God – and walk with a thankful heart – you won’t be fearful.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…” – Phil. 4:6 (NKJV)
“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” – Rosa Parks
That quote from Rosa Parks sums up these ten verses perfectly in regard to how fear can be diminished in your life—when your mind is made up to trust God, and not to lean into the fear.
Has there ever been a time when you were afraid, but God and His Word helped you through it?
