Ten Verses to Memorize and Recite – Joy
When You Need the Joy of the Lord in Your Life
by Joanne Troppello
“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up, I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain…to feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.” – Kevyn Aucoin
There is a difference between happiness and joy. You can experience happiness with your circumstances or with a relationship. You can experience joy in those things as well. However, you can experience joy even when going through a heartbreak or difficulty—and not generally experience happiness in those times.
That joy only comes from the Lord in those situations.
The following verses have helped me when I needed to feel the joy of the Lord through adversity. Consider memorizing these verses and reciting them as the need arises.
1. Rejoice in All Things
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV)
2. Joy Through Tribulation
…rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; – Romans 12:12 (NKJV)
3. Find Joy in the Lord Always
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! – Philippians 4:4 (NKJV)
4. God Comforts You with His Joy
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. – Psalm 94:19 (NIV)
5. Experience Joy in God’s Presence
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. – Psalm 16:11 (NKJV)
6. Finding Joy Through Prayer
Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. – John 16:24 (NKJV)
7. Joy Through Godly Communication
A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is! – Proverbs 15:23 (NKJV)
8. Joy is a Fruit of the Holy Spirit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. – Gal. 5:22-23 (NKJV)
9. Continual Joy in the Lord
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” – John 15:11 (NKJV)
10. Joy is Life-Giving
A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones. – Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV)
“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” – Greg Anderson
That quote has a simple yet profound message. Sometimes you may feel that the journey is difficult, and you won’t find joy until you achieve your goals or find fulfillment in the situation.
However, you should focus on the journey. Find joy in the moment, even when life is hard. When you remain in communion with the Lord, it is easier to find that inner joy even when happiness is fleeting. Memorizing and reciting those Bible verses can help you in your journey toward finding the joy of the Lord.
