5 Benefits of Playing Solitaire
Reasons Why I Have Enjoyed Playing This Card Game
by J.M. Troppello
Growing up, my siblings and I liked playing card games like Rummy and War. I always enjoyed playing Solitaire. I still like playing this game as an adult. My favorite reason why is because it is a great distraction when I need to calm my thoughts and focus on something else—other than work projects or the latest drama that is going on in my circle of family and friends.
Since I enjoy playing Solitaire so much, I checked into the origins of the game. According to Angela Tung from The Week magazine:
“The earliest printed reference of the word Solitaire the game appeared in 1746, according to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). However, this probably refers to peg solitaire, a board game played with marbles and pegs. Solitaire the card game more likely came about toward the end of the 18th century in the Baltic region of Europe. In England and France, this game was originally called Patience.”
Maybe you’ve played Solitaire. If you haven’t played yet, consider the following 5 benefits of playing Solitaire. I’ve experienced these benefits from playing Solitaire—both with an actual deck of cards and playing the online game of Solitaire.
1. Entertaining Pastime
Solitaire is a fun game you can play if you need to pass the time and overcome boredom. You don’t need anyone else with you to play. You can play this game easily on your phone, tablet, laptop, or PC—or go old school and use a deck of cards, for those who are more tactile-minded.
2. Time to Think
This game can provide you with an ideal way to regroup and think. It can help to reset your mindset. I remember when my husband and I were moving from our townhouse and downsizing to a condo. My husband had a job outside the home. I worked (and still do) as a freelance writer from home.
So, I was in charge of the majority of packing before the move. I remember many times during that period, that I would sit at our dining room table and take a break. I played Solitaire and used it as a way to focus my mindset while enjoying a simple, yet fun game.
3. Cultivates Brain Skills
When you play solitaire, you need to have a strategy. Playing this game can help you improve your strategizing skills. It can be helpful in honing your memorization skills as well. With all the information your brain is inundated with daily—through emails, texts, DM’s, social media newsfeeds, online articles, TV shows, news outlets, and other content—your mind needs to be sharp. Playing a game like classic Solitaire, Freecell Solitaire, or Pyramid Solitaire can help your brain stay sharp.
4. Great Stress Reliever
While playing solitaire, your mind can focus on the game. Your racing thoughts should stop swirling around your mind.
“Don’t think you’re wasting time by things like playing Solitaire—it’s good therapy to give your brain a break now and then.” – Anna Balcsik
Playing this game can help you to relax and destress.
5. Competitive Outlet
When you play solitaire, it gives you the chance to compete against the game. You get the feeling of accomplishment without having to stressfully compete with others. I’m not a generally competitive person as it pertains to competing with others. However, I do like competing against myself and trying to develop better skill sets to enhance my mindset and productivity level. Playing a game like Solitaire gives me that chance to play competitively against myself.

If you’re looking for an entertaining pastime, want time to think, need to cultivate brain skills, have to relieve stress, and want a competitive outlet—consider playing Freecell Solitaire, or one of the other variations of this card game.
