3 Basic Ways to Develop Stronger Faith
Read the Bible, Pray More, and Worship the Lord
by J.M. Troppello
“Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” – Saint Augustine
I’ve been a Christian for 33 years. I got saved at a young age. My faith has had ups and downs through the years. However, I’ve learned that there are three things you can do to develop stronger faith.
How to Develop Stronger Faith
“If fear is cultivated it will become stronger, if faith is cultivated it will achieve mastery.” – John Paul Jones
1. Effectively Study the Bible
When I don’t consistently read the Bible, my faith suffers. Reading the Bible daily and actually studying specific passages, has been a huge catalyst in growing my faith.
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. (Romans 10:17, NKJV)
I’ve memorized that verse from Romans 10:17—a simple statement with a powerful message. If you want to develop your faith, read the Word of God, and read it out loud. Reading it out loud gives your spirit a chance to hear the message from the Bible.
That cultivates stronger faith.
I have been reading through the book of Psalms each morning by myself. My husband and I have been reading through the book of Romans at night. In both study times, we read from our Thomas Nelson study Bible (NKJV). We read the passage of scripture. Then we read the study notes pertaining to each verse.
That has helped us immensely with gaining a deeper understanding of each passage of scripture.
We also read related verses listed in the study section. Sometimes, I even get lost down a rabbit trail reading and reading other verses and related verses.
It’s so great to get lost in enjoyment reading God’s Word!
2. Deepen Your Prayer life
I love to pray. I’ve always enjoyed praying. Maybe you like to pray. However, you might not. Yet, if you want to develop a stronger faith in the Lord, I urge you to deepen your prayer life.
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” (Eph. 6:18, NKJV)
Keep the lines of communication open with God throughout the day. It’s so simple yet profound.
God wants to commune with you daily.
Share your heart with the Lord. Be open and vulnerable. Let Him know how you feel. Yes, you need to act on faith, not your feelings. But you can’t ignore them. Share them with God. He cares about everything that concerns you.
Follow the example of the Lord’s Prayer when you pray.
9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (Matt 6:9-13, NKJV)
Prayer can be an effective way of helping you to get your eyes off your problems and back on to the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of God.
3. Spend Time in Worship
Worshipping God is an important part of the growing Christian’s life.
When you worship God, you are giving Him the glory that He deserves. He is all powerful, all present, and all knowing. He created this world. He gave you life in your body and gave His Son to die for the world.
There is SO much to worship God for—even when you’re dealing with troubles in life.
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23-24, NKJV)
Start your time with praise. Thank God for all that He’s done in your life. Sing songs of praise. Then shift your focus to worshipping God for His majesty. He is worthy of your worship. Enter into a time of singing worship songs. Pray and praise in the Spirit if you are led in that direction.
Stay open. Your spiritual mindset will be renewed through praise and worship.
Start to Develop Stronger Faith
If you’ve been wanting to develop your faith, consider implementing these three simple steps into your daily schedule. Study the Bible, deepen your prayer life, and spend time in praise and worship.
It’s that simple.
Yet the results will be profound in your life—body, soul, and spirit.
