3 Signs of a Growing Christian
Embracing the Daily Journey of Growing in the Lord

“All growth that is not toward God is growing to decay.” – George MacDonald
Growing in your walk with the Lord is a daily journey.
Some days are good, others bad, and some are in between. Yet through it all, God is faithful and will give you His peace—especially more so when you focus on Him and not on the difficulties in life.
But, it’s important not to be stagnant in your Christian walk.
Consider the following three signs of a Christian who is growing in their spiritual life.
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. (II Peter 3:14-20, NKJV)
1. When Your Faith and Hope are Strong Within You
Having hope in the Lord and faith that He is in control of your life are two important factors of growing as a Christian. When both of those are strong within you, that’s a sign that you are growing in your walk with the Lord.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV)
If you lack faith and hope, you aren’t trusting God as you should. This is not meant in condemnation. I struggled with anxiety and worry for many years of my life as a Christian. I had to memorize a lot of verses on faith to help me keep my focus on God.
2. When You Freely Show Love and Kindness to Others
Love is the basic foundation of the Christian faith. God loved the world and sent His only Son to die on the cross to become a bridge for people to get saved (John 3:16).
And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. (I John 4:16, NKJV)
As a Christian, you need to show that love and kindness to those you encounter each day. Believe me, I know this can be difficult. There are some people in my own circle of family and friends who are difficult to love. Yet, that is what God wants me to do.
Everyone sins. Some have come to salvation in Christ. Others haven’t. If you focus on condemning people in the world, that can become a hindrance in bringing them to the Kingdom of God. Loving people into the Kingdom is the answer. God is the judge, not you or me.
3. When You Hunger and Thirst for the Bible, Prayer, and Worship
You know you are growing in your walk with the Lord when you actually want to spend time with Him through reading His Word, praying, and worshipping.
O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. 2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.
3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You. 4 Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. 5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. (Psalm 63: 1-5, NKJV)
I love this passage from Psalm 63. This is a Psalm of David “when he was in the wilderness in Judah.” It’s beautiful to see how David longed for God. He sought Him early in the morning. He wanted to see God’s power and glory. He wanted to praise God and knew that this close communion to God would satisfy his soul.
I’ve always loved to read the Bible, pray, and worship. Yet many times, life gets in the way. I get busy. Problems stifle me and my communion with God becomes stagnated.
However, each day is a new day. There is always another chance to regroup mentally, physically, and spiritually—and cultivate that closeness with the Lord again. He is waiting for you with arms open wide.
Focus on Improving Your Spiritual Walk Daily
