4 Blessings of Being Still Before God
Focusing on Less of You and More of God
by J.M. Troppello
“During my days of deepest grief, in all of my shock, sorrow, and struggles, I sat at the feet of God. I literally spent hours each day reading God’s Word, meditating on Scripture, and praying. I intentionally spent a significant amount of time being still before God. – Rick Warren
I’ve experienced the blessings of being still before God.
I’ve also experienced the lack of those blessings when I’ve chosen to do things my own way—not heeding God’s direction for my life.
“Hindsight is always twenty-twenty.” – Billy Wilder
It’s easy to see where you’ve veered off the right track when you look back in the rearview mirror of life. I believe that God wants to prevent you from making mistakes in life. Yes, you have free will. He just knows that there is a better plan for your life that you don’t always see.
That’s why it’s so important to cultivate that intimate relationship with the Lord. You can then be open to the Holy Spirit’s leading. One vital way to develop that intimacy is spending time in communion with Him.
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10, NKJV)
Consider the following blessings of being still before God.
1. Quiets the Mind
When you truly sit still before God, that forces you to quiet the raging thoughts of your mind. Fully immersing yourself in the moment of being still before the Lord helps you to stop thinking about your problems and how you can find solutions.
It causes you to let go of all anxiety and rest in His calming presence. That is a beautiful blessing to be able to quiet your mind and rest in God.
2. Calms Your Soul
When you sit still before God and focus only on your breathing and that God has given you life—that can calm your soul. Your soul is where your emotions are felt. When you’re anxious, you feel these feelings of anxiety in your soul.
Slowly breathing in and out the breath of life that God gives you each minute of every day can move you beyond anxiety to a place of peace and calm.
3. Renews Your Faith
Once you are calm enough to lay aside your problems and place them at God’s feet, you can focus on renewing your faith. You do this by reminding yourself of all the times in the past when God has been faithful. You remember when you prayed, and God answered your prayer.
Sitting before God in true peace will help reset your life balance. You’ll stop focusing on the problems in your life and start focusing on the majesty of the God who saved you.
4. Empowers Your Spirit
This fourth blessing is perhaps the most invaluable. Spending quality time with God—where you are quiet, and He speaks to you—can empower your spirit. He will empower your spirit by reminding you of the Bible verses you’ve memorized. He’ll give you the precise message that you need to hear in that moment.
When you walk through life with your spirit empowered by the Holy Spirit, victory will be yours. Of course, you won’t get everything you want. God is not a genie in a bottle. However, true victory in the Lord is when you allow Him to help you live victorious through His Spirit empowering your spirit.
Be Still Before God Today
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (John 14:26, NKJV)
God wants to shower you with these blessings as you are still before Him. You’ll benefit from a mind that is quiet and not tossed to and fro with raging thoughts. He will calm your restless soul. God will renew your faith in Him. He will empower your spirit.
