7 Types of Personal Worship of God
Enhancing Personal Communication with the Lord
by J.M. Troppello
Worship is a powerful tool in the life of a Christian.
It can open up the windows of Heaven to you.
Yet, you need to view worship not as a means to be blessed by God, but as a way for you to honor and bless Him. He deserves all your praise.
And he appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to commemorate, to thank, and to praise the Lord God of Israel. (I Chronicles 16:4, NKJV)
5 Types of Praising God
In an article that I read on the Kenneth Copeland Ministries website, I learned about five different types of praise to God. There are more than these five types of praise in the Hebrew language. However, I’ve chosen to focus on these five: barak, yadah, halal, shabach, and tehillah.
1. Barak (baw-rak’) – Bowing down and kneeling before God in worship
2. Yadah (yaw-daw) – Worshipping God with outstretched hands
3. Halal (haw-lal’) – Shining, boasting, and celebrating clamorously about God
4. Shabach (Shaw-bakh’) – Shouting loudly or in a commanding tone of worship
5. Tehillah (teh-hil-law’) Singing unrehearsed and spontaneous worship to God
He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen. (Deuteronomy 10:21, NKJV)
Two Ways Christians Can Worship
1. Congregational – This happens in a church or church-like setting. Praise and worship usually occur when the service begins and is prior to the sermon time.
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:21-24, NKJV)
2. Personal – This worship occurs privately between you and God. Worshipping God is a way that you can enhance your personal communication with Him.
15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. 16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (Hebrews 13:15-16, NKJV)
Additionally, there are various ways that you can worship the Lord. I’ve compiled a listing of:
7 ways Christians can worship God.
Singing – You can sing a cappella or sing along with praise and worship songs on CD’s or through an app like Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube.
Praying – Before asking God for things when you pray, spend time verbally praising Him to show your love, adoration, and thankfulness for all He’s done and for all that He is—omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent etc.
Reading – By reading the Bible, studying it, and applying it to your life, you are focusing on His greatness and the power of His Word. That is worship.
Spiritually – A deeper level of worship is by entering into a time of prayer and the Holy Spirit leads you into praying and singing in tongues.
Honoring – By imitating Christ and accepting the power of the Holy Spirit to enable you to live rightly, you’re worshipping God and honoring Him.
Dancing – You can worship God through dancing before Him. There are many Psalms showing how the people danced and praised God for His majesty.
Surrendering – Diving deeper into a time of worship and prayer, you could be ‘slain in the spirit’ or face down kneeling or even prostrate before God.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1, NKJV)
Enhance Your Christian Walk by Worshipping
Use worship as a time to refocus your soul and spirit on God and how powerful He is—and how small your troubles are in comparison with His power.
Make a decision to joyfully enter into congregational worship each time you attend church in person or online. Even if you came to church with a bad mood or negative outlook, ask God to help you focus on Him during that time.
Practice these 7 ways to worship God throughout the week. This is not meant to be formulaic. Be spontaneous in your love and adoration of God. But if you haven’t been worshipping consistently and need to get into that positive and productive spiritual habit, consider using these 7 ways to worship to enhance your walk with the Lord.
