Allow the God of Hope

To Fill You with All Joy and Peace

by J.M. Troppello

Are you abounding in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit?

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13, NKJV)

Romans 15:13 is one of my favorite verses. I’ve memorized it years ago. I’ve recited it to myself many times when I needed a boost spiritually. Yet, when I read that verse last night from the passage of scripture in Romans that my husband and I are studying together, the meaning of this verse resonated deeply with me.

If I allowed the Holy Spirit to work in my life and believed, I could be filled with all joy and peace and abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. You could do that too. Let’s break down this one verse.

1. God of Hope

I love these three words, God of hope. Those words give me hope. As I’ve read them, recited them, and ‘devoured’ them in my spirit, they opened my spiritual mindset to a whole new world of possibilities. God wants you to embrace that hope in your life as well.

2. Fill with Joy and Peace

The God of hope will fill you with joy and peace. You can’t fill yourself with this true joy and peace in and of yourself. That thought should comfort you, knowing that God cares so much about you that He wants to fill you with ALL joy and peace.

3. As You Believe

The verse says, may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing. That’s the key. You must believe in the God of hope to truly receive that joy and peace. You won’t be overwhelmed—in a good way—with that joy and peace unless you step all in with the God of hope.

4. Abound in Hope

When you believe in the God of hope and are filled with joy and peace because you believe in Him—you will abound in hope. Abound is a beautiful word. According to Dictionary.com, abound means to “exist in large numbers or amounts.” Synonyms are plentiful and abundant. Imagine that. You can abound in large numbers or amounts of hope. That thought makes me smile. This world could use more hope today.

5. Power of the Holy Spirit

All of this is completed through the work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Imagine all the joy and peace and hope you could have if you simply believe in the God of hope and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Abound in Hope Today

It seems counterintuitive to our human mindset, but it is possible to abound in hope each day. You can be filled with all joy and peace. You simply need to embrace the power of the Holy Spirit as He works in your life, and as you believe in the God of hope. It’s not of your own strength. It’s only through God’s strength that you can live victoriously each day as a Christian in this fallen world—as you look toward the hope of eternity one day.
