Are You Cultivating a Joyful Spirit in Your Life?

You Can Choose to Cultivate That Joy or Not to Cultivate It

by J.M. Troppello

What does it mean to have a joyful heart? How would you define that in your life?

A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones. (Proverbs 17:22, NKJV)

For me, having a joyful heart means that I have the joy of the Lord when life is good, bad, and in-between. His joy is what fills my heart and gives me the strength to keep going each day.

Having that joy doesn’t mean that I’m laughing all the time. It doesn’t mean that I’m never sad, upset, or depressed. It means that I have His joy in my heart while I am going through every aspect of the daily journey of life.

You have the choice to cultivate that joy in your heart or not to cultivate it. What are you choosing to cultivate today? Consider the following ways that you can cultivate a joyful spirit in your life.

1. History

Take a trip down memory lane. Think about all the times God has helped you. God is faithful. He will never fail you. I like to think about life this way—I don’t have everything I want, but I have everything I need.

2. Record

Start recording God’s faithfulness in your life. Write your blessings in a thankfulness journal. Use an actual journal or a journal app or the notebook app on your phone. Write these blessings down so that you can refer to them when you begin to grumble or feel ungrateful.

3. Community

Immerse yourself in your joyfulness community. Those people are the individuals who are on a similar journey as you’re on to find joy in life. Connecting with these people will provide you with the support and encouragement that you need on a daily basis to stay consistent in your journey toward cultivating joy in your life.

4. Mindset

See your life through a Kingdom focus. Time here on earth is short compared to the time you’ll be spending in eternity. Live your life here on earth for God’s Kingdom in heaven and His purposes for your life. Trust that He will guide you on this journey to find joy.

5. P.R.W. Focus

The P.R.W. focus means to pray, read the Bible, and worship God each day. Those three things are the most important factors in growing in your walk with the Lord. If you want to cultivate more joy in your life, you need to focus on those three things daily. Praying will enhance your communion and relationship with God. Reading the Bible will enable you to learn more about God and how He wants you to live your life as a Christian. Worshiping God daily shows your love and adoration for Him and helps you to focus on Him and not your problems.

Cultivate Joy in Your Heart

You choose your mindset each day. Whether or not you choose to cultivate joy in your heart is up to you. Of course, having the joy of the Lord doesn’t mean that you ignore all the pain you’re experiencing. It means that His joy and peace comforts you through it. Remember the following five ways that you can cultivate more joy in your life each day.

  • History

  • Record

  • Community

  • Mindset

  • P.R.W. Focus

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (James 1:2-9, NKJV)
