Are You Letting Your Light Shine?
Letting Your Light Shine Before the World
by J.M. Troppello
“The light of a holy example is the Gospel’s main argument.” – R.L. Dabney
This statement from R.L. Dabney gets right to the point of the Christian’s mission in the world today. The main point of the Gospel message is that Jesus died so that we could live! As a Christian, it’s your job to be a light to the world. It’s my job to be a light to the world.
Many times, your behavior as a believer is going to be the only message of the Gospel that a nonbeliever sees. Is your behavior effectively reflecting the message of the Gospel? Is mine? I hope we’re all asking ourselves this question.
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5: 13-16, NKJV)
Light dispels darkness. Believers must be a light to the world. “And He told them to let their light shine by virtue of their good works so others would recognize the light and life of God and glorify Him.” (Dr. David Jeremiah)
How to Be a Good Witness
As a young believer, I had a big problem with anger issues. After many years of walking with God, He’s helped me so much with becoming calmer and less agitated over unimportant things. Reacting in anger to people and circumstances wasn’t a good witness—and it wasn’t healthy for me or others.
I’ve since come to realize that life is so short. I don’t need to waste time stagnating in anger. Instead – through the strength of the Holy Spirit working in my life – I can respond in an emotionally and spiritually mature manner to people and circumstances.
The change in my behavior has been noticed by some of my non-Christian friends. I pray that the change in my life can be a good witness to them. You can be a good witness of the Gospel by doing the following five things.
Working on your own walk with the Lord
Thinking before you speak (or post online)
Loving with God’s unconditional love
Serving others through works of service
Sharing your testimony as God opens doors
I’m on this life journey with you. I write this often, but it’s so true—God’s grace is new each day. He is continually working in the lives of believers. Stay open to God daily. He is always with you. He will open the right doors for you to share your testimony with others.
