Christian, are You Being Led by the Holy Spirit?

Finding Peace Being Still Before the Lord Each Day

by J.M. Troppello

We had a guest speaker, Tim Enloe, come to our church recently. He preached several times during the weekend. His sermon on Sunday was especially meaningful to me since he spoke about the Holy Spirit in such an easy way to understand. This was the first time that my husband was truly interested and touched by a sermon about the Holy Spirit. I’ve been praying for him for a while, and it was a beautiful answer to prayer. We purchased Tim’s book, Goodbye Chicken, Hello Dove. I’m excited that my husband is excited to read this book together with me.

I am a long-time listener of the Glenn Beck Radio Show. It’s mostly political commentary. However, he also speaks about God – especially more recently. In the last few months, he’s been sharing how important it is for believers to be led by the Holy Spirit. I completely agree with that sentiment. I’ve been feeling a strong sense about doing that as well. My husband and I have been praying more together and doing devotional time as well. We’ve been praying individually and as a couple for God to open our eyes to things that needed to change in our lives.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess [a]that Jesus [b]Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. 4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. (I John 4:1-6, NKJV)

Seeking God’s Guidance

“God has given us the Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds. He is eyes and understanding to us.” – A.W. Tozer

I love this quote from A.W. Tozer. The Holy Spirit definitely will illuminate your mind. He is the eyes and understanding that you need to guide you each day. However, you have an important role to play in this guidance process. If you’re not open to hearing AND obeying the Holy Spirit, then you’ll be missing out on such a beautiful blessing in your life.

I am in the same boat as all of you. I’m a work in progress just like you. There are times when I hear the Holy Spirit’s voice and don’t obey Him. Other times, I’m too busy and don’t hear Him at all because I’m not making time to listen.

It’s so important to hone your listening spiritual ears and remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. I’ve been trying to hone mine recently as well. I’ve been spending more time in Bible reading and study. Reading and studying is not enough. Applying God’s Word to my life is the most important part of that process.

I’ve been focusing on spending more time in quiet before the Lord. Praying is pivotal in growing your communication with God. However, being still before Him is so vital to know that God is still in control.

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (Psalm 46:10, NKJV)

If you’ve been feeling disconnected from God and rattled by all that is going on in the world today, I urge you to take time to be still before God. Time spent with God is never wasted.
