Have You Learned How to Be Still Before God?

Be Still Before God and Know that He is God and in Control

by J.M. Troppello

“When God gets us alone by affliction, heartbreak, or temptation, by disappointment, sickness, or by thwarted affection, by a broken friendship, or by a new friendship—when He gets us absolutely alone, and we are dumbfounded, and cannot ask one question, then He begins to expound.” – Oswald Chambers

God is there in the middle of your pain. He is present when you have no answers – when you don’t know what to do next. God is with you. He knows your heart. The problem is that in the midst of those overwhelming circumstances, it’s not always easy to see or feel that God is with you.

When that happens, stop what you’re doing and just breathe deeply and reset.

10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (Psalm 46:10, NKJV)

Focus on calming your mind and ignoring all the noise around you. Take those precious moments of quiet time with God to recharge your spirit. Read this verse from Psalm 46:10 over and over again. Read it until you truly comprehend that God is not asking you to move mountains in your life. He is the one who will move those mountains.

God is asking you to be still before Him. Know that He is God.

It’s hard to be still before God when things are in chaos in your life. The pile of bills keeps rising. You don’t know how you’re going to pay for everything that your family needs. Maybe you’re dealing with sickness in your life or the life of someone you love. You might be overwhelmed by broken relationships.

Whatever you’re going through in your life, God wants you to be still and know that He is God. He’s not asking you to fix anything because you can’t fix those things on your own—in your own strength.

God is asking you to breathe deeply of His presence in your life. Sit before Him and rest in silence. It’s pivotal to pray daily. However, it’s just as crucial to sit in silence before God. He can speak to your spirit when you are truly listening to what He wants to say to you.

I know it’s not always easy to make time for the Lord in your life.

Your family keeps you busy. There are so many things you probably cram into the day. However, if you’re not putting God first, you’ll be less likely to deal with all the stresses of life. Putting God on the backburner in your life will result in the problems of life overwhelming you.

When you value your time with God, that will help you keep your focus on Him. Then you’ll know how to fight your battles. Those battles are fought in the following ways:

  • Standing on God’s Word

  • Being Still Before God

  • Communing Daily with Him

  • Cultivating Gratitude in Your Heart

I’m still a work in progress in this area as well. I love to pray. I read the Word. I’ve been cultivating gratitude in my heart. However, I’m not so great at being still before God. I can blame it on being so busy. Yet, I know that’s not a good excuse. I need to prioritize more time where I’m simply sitting in silence before God daily.

Have you learned how to be still before God?
