How Do You Overcome Temptations in Your Life?

God Always Provides a Way Out of Temptation

by J.M. Troppello

Have you ever been tempted? I’m sure even I could answer that question for you. We’re all in this human experience together. We’ve all experienced temptation, are experiencing it, and will continue to experience it for as long as we live. Oswald Chambers wrote, “We cannot stand against the wiles of the devil by our own wits.” That statement is 100% correct!

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.(I Cor. 10:12-13, NKJV)

Paul wrote these two verses in I Cor. 10:12-13 right after he wrote verses 1-11 in that chapter, explaining Old Testament examples of people falling to temptations. That statement in verse 12 is powerful and to the point. You should take heed lest you fall.

Just because the Corinthian believers were saved and justified by Jesus’s death and resurrection, that didn’t mean they weren’t susceptible to falling prey to temptation. They needed to take Paul’s warnings seriously. As a believer today, you and I should also take that warning to heart.

For me, it’s comforting that God will always provide you with a way of escape from temptation. He’s not going to let you falter – provided you trust in Him and obey His guidance. Think back to the times you were tempted in some way, failed, and sinned. God may have reminded you of a Bible verse or you might have been convicted by the Holy Spirit. Somehow, God provided you with a way out.

I know the sorrow of being tempted and then faltering in sin. However, I have known the joy of overcoming temptation through the help of the Holy Spirit. When the believer is faithful and victorious over those temptations, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. (See: Rev. 2:10 for more details on the Crown of Life)

12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. (James 1:12-18, NKJV)

I’m thankful that God is faithful and will always provide a way out of temptation. How do you overcome temptations in your life?
