How to Discover God’s Will for Your Life

Maneuvering Through Life with a Heart of Faith

by J.M. Troppello

There have been many times in my life that I’ve prayed for direction from God. I’ve sought answers on what He wanted from me and which path I should take. Many times, I’ve listened to His guidance. Other times, I chose my own path.

When I’ve chosen my own path, bad things generally happened—such as consequences for my actions. During those times, I’ve had to reconnect with God and ask forgiveness for my disobedience. God always welcomed me back into communion with Him. However, I still had to experience those consequences.

If you’ve been asking God for direction and want to discover His will for your life, consider the following 5 ways that you can maneuver through life with a heart of faith.

1. Study the Bible

Many things that you may seek answers for are in the Bible. For example, understanding good stewardship and how to manage your money or how to treat others with God’s love are shown in the Bible. Study the Bible so that you can effectively apply it to your life.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2, NKJV)

I love that passage from Romans chapter 12. When you renew your mind, your spirit is transformed. That transformation enables you to be conformed to God’s Word and not to the world. When you renew your mind with God’s Word, you can ‘test and approve what God’s will is’—and that’s such a beautiful thing.

2. Worship & Pray

Cultivate your relationship with God by spending time with Him. This can help you to focus on God and not your problems. It will enable to you reset your mindset and build up your faith as you develop deeper communion with God.

3. Find Godly Counsel

Talk to your pastor, small group leader, prayer team at church, or a trusted friend or family member. Make sure the person you confide in is mature in their Christian faith. This person needs to have the capacity to remain neutral and give advice according to God’s Word and godly wisdom.

4. Seek the Spirit

Follow Psalm 46:10 and be still before God and know that He is God. Trust that He has a plan for your life (Jer. 29:11-14).

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)

Ask Him to give you guidance. Stay open to His leading in your life. Know that He wants to provide the direction that you seek.

5. Walk by Faith

Wait for God’s leading in your life. Don’t be rash. If you feel hesitant or a pause in your spirit, take a step back. Pray more about the issue. There is a delicate balance between stepping out in faith and trusting God to direct you according to His perfect timing.

Trust God to Show You the Pathway

When you need to discover God’s will for your life, use these 5 steps to help you navigate through your journey of faith as a Christian.

  • Study the Bible

  • Worship & Pray

  • Find Godly Counsel

  • Seek the Spirit

  • Walk by Faith

Life is not easy. You’ll walk in hills and valleys. Yet, the best part is that no matter whether you chose obedience to His will—or walked your own path—God is always waiting for you to walk back into His loving embrace. His grace and peace are beautiful.
