How to Keep Your Heart Awakened to God’s Leading
5 Ways to Cultivate a Heart that is Open to God Each Day
by J.M. Troppello
One important thing I’ve learned in my years as a Christian is that God doesn’t pull away from me. I pull away from Him. There are times that I’m in sin and I hide from God in shame like Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden when they ate the forbidden fruit. Other times, I may have heard from God, but don’t want to follow His plan – because my plan is better—or at least, I think it is.
There are so many reasons that you could pull away from God. Yet, it’s comforting to know that He will never pull away from you. He is always waiting for you with arms open wide. Remember the parable of the Prodigal son found in Luke 15:11-32. I don’t want to be like the prodigal – doing my own thing. But at times, I do that and follow my flesh. I am thankful for God’s grace and forgiveness as I walk this daily life in my Christian walk.
Consider the following five ways that you can keep your heart awakened to God’s leading. Cultivating an open heart to God takes work, but it is worth it – knowing that God is leading your life—not you.
1. Cultivate Your Walk with God
If you want to remain open to God’s leading in your life, you need to cultivate your walk with the Lord. Read and study the Bible each day. Dive in deeper to understand the meaning of the verses you read, and then truly apply them in your life. Pray throughout the day. Spend time in quality prayer with God. That means spending a block of time – 15-30 minutes for example – in dedicated prayer during the day. Take the time to worship God throughout your day. Live in an attitude of worship.
2. Ask God to Soften Your Heart
It’s easy for your heart to grow hard—especially with the crazy, surreal state of the world today. That’s why it’s important for you to ask God to soften your heart to His leading in your life. Pray that your heart is softened to the people around you that you interact with daily. Ask God to help you live for His Kingdom and not your own kingdom here on earth. Believe me, I still struggle with this one daily.
3. Track Your Growth in a Journal
Self-evaluation is a powerful tool, as long as you use it the right way. You need to honestly assess your spiritual and emotional progress in your daily journey with the Lord. Don’t be too hard on yourself and live in a constant state of guilt. That is not what God wants for your life. He wants you to live as a new creation in Christ. The old nature is gone, and you are living as a new creation.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Cor. 5:17, NKJV)
Give yourself grace during your journey. You will mess up. No one is perfect. Tracking your growth in a journal is meant for you and God alone. No one needs to read it. What you write in there is solely meant to help you track your spiritual growth so you can be motivated to continue to grow in your walk with the Lord.
4. Pray for Personal Revival
Pray that God would spark a personal revival in your life. This prayer has always been unsettling for me to pray because I know this is one God would definitely answer. However, would I like the answer? Maybe I’d have to stop watching as much TV or stay off social media and spend even more time in prayer. What if God asked me to do something I didn’t want to do? Yet, that’s a good place to be—when God is trying to spur you on to even deeper spiritual growth.
5. Live in Grace and Service
During this lifelong journey of growing in the Lord, it’s vital that you live in a daily attitude of grace and service. Give grace to yourself during the journey. Offer grace to others because people are all on different journeys in their lives. You don’t know where they are at in their walk with the Lord. Maybe they are not saved, and your actions are hindering them from taking that step of faith with God. Ask God to help you develop a mindset of grace and service to others that you encounter daily.
