Is the Joy of the Lord Overflowing in Your Life?
You Can Have That Joy When You Embrace His Presence
by J.M. Troppello
It’s been a cold and dreary day. The temperature was in the mid-40’s. It rained for most of the day. It was the ideal time to make homemade beef stew in the crock pot. One bright spot was smelling the tasty aroma of beef stew simmering all day. My husband was working today and had to be out in the rain. He called me as he drove to his last customer. I said, “At least you have some tasty beef stew to look forward to when you come home.” He was happy about that. It’s one of his favorite meals – especially on a cold day.
I love the sunshine. I’m sure most people do too. On dreary days, it’s so easy to get depressed. Thinking about that today gave me pause. It opened my eyes to see how important it is to keep my eyes focused on the Lord.
Look to God, Not the Mountains in Your Life
Our worship leader was speaking about this same idea during the worship portion of the service this past Sunday. He said that having joy in the Lord can carry you through anything in your life. It doesn’t mean that you’ll be walking around happy and laughing all the time. It simply means that your inner joy isn’t dependent on your circumstances.
This cold, rainy, dreary day today reminded me of those sage words.
I can choose to be depressed about circumstances in life. Or I can choose to immerse myself in God’s presence and enjoy the beautiful byproduct of joy, which the world cannot understand.
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13, NKJV)
I love this verse from Romans. God is a God of hope. As a Christian, you can have hope in your heart each day, knowing that God is the one who gets you through every hill and valley in life. He is still in control even when life seems completely out of control.
You can have that joy and peace in believing when you trust daily that God’s got things in His capable hands. He wants you to abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
That’s the key – the Holy Spirit working in you.
You can try to muster up all the joy that you want, but it is nearly impossible to have pure joy on your own – especially when you are weighed down by difficult circumstances.
However, when you allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through you, that pure joy is possible. The joy of the Lord can be your strength.
Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Neh. 8:10, NKJV)
Is the joy of the Lord your strength today?
The joy of the Lord is definitely my strength each day. I’m not always smiling and carrying on in fake joy. It’s an inner peace, strength, and understanding that God is my strength. He carries me each step of the way. He will always be with me.
You can have the joy of the Lord as well if you trust God and enter into His presence each day. Make time to enjoy intimate communion with God daily through prayer, reading His Word, and worshipping Him for who He is, and NOT what He can give you.
