The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

Do You Know the Shepherd’s Voice?

Do you know the Shepherd’s voice?

I love this passage from John 10:22-30. According to the Thomas Nelson Study Bible (TNSB), “The events of John 7:1-10:21 occurred during the Feast of Tabernacles, which fell in the middle of October. The Feast of Dedication was celebrated for eight days in December; thus, there was a period of about two months between v 21 and 22. In 167 B.C., Antiochus Epiphanes desecrated the temple in Jerusalem, as prophesied in Daniel 11:31. The Maccabeans restored and purified the temple. In commemoration of the restoration, the Feast of Dedication was instituted. Today it is also known as the Feast of Lights or Hanukkah. John notes that the events of 10:22 occurred in winter to explain why the Lord chose a sheltered spot in which to teach (v 23).” That is referencing how Jesus went into the temple and walked in Solomon’s porch as he taught.

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.” (John 10:22-30, NKJV)

The Jewish leaders had asked Jesus if He was the Christ. Jesus responded that he already told them, and they did not believe Him (v 25). In John 4:25,26, Jesus told the woman at the well that He was the Messiah. In John 9:35-37, He told the man born blind who He was as well. Everything that Jesus did and all the miracles He performed are signs that He is indeed the Christ (see: John 20:30-31).

Knowing the Shepherd’s Voice

Jesus said that the unbelieving people do not believe because they are not His sheep. He went on to say in verse 27 that His sheep hear His voice, He knows them, and they follow Him. Those who have heeded the voice of the Shepherd (Jesus) and have accepted Him as their Savior, experience the following:

  • Know the voice of Jesus

  • Have a relationship with Him

  • Follow Jesus as Lord of their life

  • Have received eternal life

The statement that no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand is so beautiful to me. I am saved. I have the gift of eternal life. That is both beautiful and comforting to me.
