Don’t Set Yourself Up for Failure

Keeping Your Faith in God Alive

by Joanne Troppello

“But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” – Ernest Hemingway

I believe that we can set ourselves up for failure, sometimes without even realizing it. We have a dream that God has sparked in our lives.

However, we come up with every excuse in the book not to step out in faith. We think we are going to fail, so we fail to try.

I have been in this position many times. I’ve always considered myself a worrier and this is something that God has worked on in my life as a Christian over the last 33 years in my walk with the Lord.

Don’t Stop Yourself from Succeeding

Obstacles come into our path each day. We may fear failure. However, that shouldn’t stop us from stepping out into the wonderful plan God has for our lives.

I remember my mom always saying, if there is a will, there is a way. That expression has stayed with me through my adulthood.

My mom’s “can-do” spirit rubbed off on me Sure, I had issues with worrying about things too much and not giving my concerns over to God. However, I have always believed that I could do it—whatever I set my mind too.

I started as a freelance copywriter over 20 years ago. That is a long time. It’s only in the last three years that I have been making good money as a freelancer. Now, I didn’t quit my day job when I started as a freelancer. That would have been a definite way to fail.

Failure is ok. It’s going to happen. You are going to fail, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to accomplish new goals. When you fail, don’t stay down in that failure. Learn from the experience and try again to succeed.

Maybe we had an epic failure. However, read this article to learn about some of the world’s most famous people who have tried things and failed. Some of those people include the following:

  • Abraham Lincoln

  • Albert Einstein

  • Dr. Seuss

  • Emily Dickinson

  • George Lucas

  • Oprah Winfrey

  • Stephen King

  • Steve Jobs

  • J.K. Rowling

If these famous people can try and fail and try again—many of whom failed a myriad of times—why can’t we continue to try and fail and try again?

I still have dreams in my life. Yes, even middle-aged people can dream big. I know God isn’t finished with me yet. If His plans for my life were completed, then I’d be with Him in Heaven right now.

Keep trying. Keep believing. Keep trusting that God has a plan that is perfect for my life. Things won’t always be rosy. Obstacles will come, but God will be with me through it all.

If we trust Him, He will be with us through it all as well.

There are things in my heart and visions I’ve seen of all that God wants to do in my life and my husband’s life. I’m believing God one step at a time, through every fear and failure, and each victory—even the small ones.

I challenge everyone to start believing in ourselves. To believe in the deep dreams in our hearts.
