Getting Inspired to Write Creatively Again
Writing Word Portraits About Inspiring People I Know
by Joanne Troppello
I have been writing on Medium.com for about 1½ years. I’ve made a little bit of money writing there, but I had to stop writing articles so I could focus on other freelance writing paid assignments.
Recently, I read an article from one of the top writers there who has earned a lot of money from her content. It was very inspiring, and I got encouraged to start writing there again. Now, I had kept my Mustard Seed Sentinel publication there current, even when I’d stopped writing.
I was praying about the best way to write weekly content, without writing just to write and hoping that content would get views – and thus earn money. I wrote an abecedarian rhyming poem the other day. That was my first posting since December 2020.
So, I will focus on writing poems for Medium and other inspirational content. Last night while vegging out for a bit and watching TV, I had a brainstorm. I feel like God was leading me to start writing a series of Word Portraits about various people I know or who are close to me in my life.
I would not list their name or personally specific details that could identify them online. They would be short works of fiction – a/k/a flash fiction – that are based in reality. My first piece is a word portrait of the hardworking man. See the link below.
Getting Inspired Again
Have you been feeling uninspired lately? Maybe you have been very creative, when creativity used to ooze out of you. I’ve been writing articles for the magazine which are fact based, trying to inspire others, and sharing real experiences that have happened to me or others that I know.
However, I haven’t had time lately to work on edits to my fiction manuscript or writing creatively. After writing this word portrait last night, my creativity has been sparked again. That is exciting to me.
Creative writing is what my English degree was concentrated in. However, I haven’t made big bucks on my two novels and one novella – yet. So, I’ve had to work at different jobs and now write as a freelance writer. That type of writing work was satisfying because I was earning an income doing something I love – writing.
However, it still did not meet my need to get truly creative – like when writing fiction. Writing articles for my magazine had filled a bit of that creative need, but not all of it.
I’m still going to be writing A LOT of the articles for the magazine, but until I can work on my manuscripts again, I’m excited that I can have a creative outlet with Medium.com. If you are interested in reading any of my articles or content there, feel free to visit my profile on Medium.
