Delighting Yourself in the Lord

Experiencing God’s Beautiful Covering

by J.M. Troppello

My sister and her girls came over to eat dinner with us outside on our covered deck. We all wanted to hang out for a bit outside, but the forecast called for rain. That’s why we decided to eat under our covered porch since her patio is not covered. It did eventually start raining and we still stayed outside for a bit longer. However, my husband was sitting in a chair by the one end of the table closest to the edge of the porch covering. I had brought our oversized umbrella out so he could open it and lean it on the chair, so he’d be covered. I smiled at him and asked, “Aren’t you glad I brought the umbrella out?”

He was happy that I’d brought the umbrella out. As I watched rain trickle down the umbrella, it brought to my mind how special it is to delight yourself in the Lord and then to experience His beautiful ‘covering.’

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, NKJV)

In addition to doing my daily devotional and prayer time, I felt like God had wanted me to truly learn the meaning of delighting myself in the Lord. Now, this was NOT because I wanted to receive the desires of my heart. I know God is not a genie in the bottle only here to give me my ‘three wishes.’

However, I needed to obey God in this new step into a deeper relationship with Him. I felt that God wanted me to commit to spending 10-20 minutes each night before bed in praise and worship time before Him. I either use the Spotify app to listen to Bethel Music or go on to YouTube to the Bethel Music channel to watch their latest worship night and sing along and engage in true worship. The anointing on the Bethel Music worship team is so powerful.

This time of deeper worship has opened my spiritual eyes. It’s been a beautiful time of praying to God and praising Him simply for who He is and NOT what He can do for me. I’ve done this for about 5 days straight. I know that I need to keep doing this practice every night – at least until I hear otherwise from God.

Yet, I cannot express how much this deeper time of worship has impacted my life – body, soul, and spirit – in such a powerfully positive way. You can read more about the importance of praise and worship in the Christian’s life in my book, Open the Door to Worship. You can find this book available on Amazon in ebook and print format.

Do you spend time in personal praise and worship to God?
