Do You Have Any Fears that God’s Helping You Overcome?

I’m Seeing Progress in Overcoming One of My Phobias

by J.M. Troppello

I saw my nemesis again!

You may think my adversary is an overpowering person that brings fear to my heart. If you thought that, you’re wrong. My foe is tiny but freaks me out!

My nemesis is the wolf spider!

You can read more about my fear of spiders in my article: Faith Over Fear: Killing Spiders in the Mailbox.

I posted something about this once on Twitter and received a rude comment from someone who thought I shouldn’t be afraid of insects who were much smaller than me. Of course, I understand his perspective on that. I know that when you post stuff online, you open yourself up to all kinds of comments. However, this person couldn’t understand this from my point of view.

Maybe you aren’t afraid of insects and all types of creepy crawlers. You might understand my fears because you have a similar issue with spiders.

We live out in a rural area. Our backyard is adjacent to a large field. When we first moved in three years ago, there was a HUGE problem with wolf spiders. They were everywhere—in the basement, garage, and in the house. It freaked me out so much! Thankfully, my husband works in pest control. In the ensuing years, he’s treated the house and property. The problem has been controlled very well.

I haven’t seen any for months. Until today!

Facing My Fears

God has taught me so many lessons on facing my fears – all because of this infestation with the wolf spiders through the years. My sister and her girls live next door. They had the same issue with the spiders. She and her girls are just as afraid of them as I am.

Yet, there is a difference now in our reaction when we see any wolf spiders. Both my sister and I are ‘experts’ at killing smaller spiders now – not of the Wolf spider variety. I make that point because ALL spiders used to freak us out. Now that we’ve had to deal with the BIG Wolf spiders, we’re less afraid of other smaller insects.

When I saw my nemesis today, I didn’t freak out. I wasn’t happy to see it, but I also wasn’t paralyzed with fear – like I used to be whenever I saw one. I remember being on the phone with my husband once as he came home from work. I was freaking out that I’d seen a Wolf spider inside the living room. I was frozen in my chair. I couldn’t even move to try to kill it.

With regard to today’s foe, I would’ve killed it, but I wasn’t able to get to it. Then it moved underneath the deck into a pile of leaves. In the past, I would’ve been paralyzed with fear, not able to continue with my work. However, I went upstairs to our deck and got back to work on some freelance projects.

My husband called shortly after that on his way home from work. I told him about the incident. I told him I wasn’t happy, but at least I didn’t freak out. That’s progress.

3 Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. (Psalm 56:3, NKJV)

I know some people may think it’s ridiculous that I’m afraid of spiders. And that’s okay. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. It’s one of my fears. But, at least, God’s been helping me become braver about it.

Do you have any fears that God’s helping you overcome?
