How to Deal with a Negative Attitude

Lean on God as Your Rock to Give You Peace and Joy

by J.M. Troppello

It can be difficult to overcome negativity in life. With God’s help, you can reset your mindset and get your spirit back on track with cultivating a joyful heart in the Lord. Consider the following ways you can turn a negative attitude around.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-24, NKJV)

1. Slap Yourself

Okay, just kidding. Don’t literally slap yourself. But sometimes you need to do something drastic to snap yourself out of the pity party you’ve thrown for yourself. Learn how to read your own body, soul, and spirit. Get to know your ups and downs—and what makes you tick, or what makes you go down the road of depression. Be diligent to realize those times when you need to snap yourself out of the negativity.

2. Get Support

You probably don’t want to talk to anyone when you’re in a bad mood. However, that’s when you really need support. If you’ve been cultivating a good support group of friends and family members, you’ll have people readily available to help you when you need to talk.

3. Pray Even Harder

Hopefully, you’ve been praying already. When you’re feeling negative feelings, you’ll likely not feel like praying. I know. It’s a struggle when you’re in that pessimistic mindset. Yet, you need to muster the strength to pray and share your heart with God. Be open with Him. He wants to hear from you—especially when you are going through a situation that is causing you to spiral into despair and negativity.

4. Focus on One Verse

When negativity takes over, your mind is likely swirling with racing thoughts. Have a few verses handy that resonate with you—as in memorized scripture or scripture that is written on note cards or in the notepad on your phone. Download the Bible Gateway App on your phone or tablet so you have easy access to read God’s Word if you’re not home and don’t have your Bible with you. Speak those verses out loud to yourself throughout the day to build up your faith and move you out of negativity.

5. Inspire Yourself

Have a plan in place for how you can get inspired when negativity sets in. Watch inspirational programming like movies on streaming services like PureFlix or Up Faith & Family. Listen to inspirational music. Spend time listening to praise and worship music. Take a walk. Get outside and breathe in the fresh air. Do whatever you need to do to inspire yourself and get yourself out of the negative frame of mind.

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. (Psalm 5:11, NKJV)

Turn Around Your Negative Attitude

I share this a lot, but you have choices to make. You can choose to be miserable, or you can choose to be positive. Believe me, I know all about how crummy life can be. Yet, I’m not advocating that you go skipping through life—in a positivity fog—and never face the realities. On the contrary, I say face those realities, but ask God to give you joy in your spirit to help you make it through the good times, bad times, and in-between times. Let God be your rock and strength each day. Lean on Him.
