How to Keep Your ‘Why’ at the Forefront of Your Mind
4 Steps to Solidify Your Reason for Accomplishing Your Goals
by J.M. Troppello
Your ‘why’ is the thing that keeps you going when obstacles come your way. It reminds you why you’re doing what you’re doing and why you should keep going even when life gets tough. According to Gail Matthews’ Goal Research Summary, “People who write down their goals are 20% more successful in accomplishing them than those who did not.”
It's not always easy to stay focused on your why – especially when you’re distracted with living life. However, there are ways to keep your why at the forefront of your mind.
If you don’t know what your why is, you won’t be able to build your goals around it. Take some time to identify your reason for moving forward. Your why will likely change over time – and that’s normal because life is always changing.
Next you need to solidify your why by writing it down. You can write it down in a journal, keep it posted on your refrigerator, write it down on the memo app on your phone, or simply put it somewhere where you’ll see it every day. Solidifying your why by making it ‘concrete’ in written format can help you to remember your reason for continuing to succeed in life.
The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology has reported that “384 tests have shown that goal-setting has a statistically significant effect on behavior.”
Start living out your why each day. Streamline your goals and get back to the basics. Plan your goals to coincide with your why. The more you align your goals with your why, the easier it will be to stay focused on it. Executing goals aligned with your why can keep you from getting distracted from doing things that don’t line up with your true reason for completing your goals.
You can achieve more when you partner with someone who can help you stay focused on your why. Confide in an individual who truly understands the importance of you staying focused on your why. This person needs to be able to encourage you to keep going when obstacles threaten to derail you from achieving your goals. That’s when you can use some encouragement.
Don’t Get Distracted from Your ‘Why’
A Locke & Latham study revealed that “90% of people perform better with relevant and challenging goals.” Don’t get distracted from your why. Identify it, solidify it by writing the why down, execute your goals in line with that why, and seek support from an encouraging partner.
You can achieve more than you think you’re capable of accomplishing. Figure out your why and line up your goals with it. What do you do to keep your why at the forefront of your mind?
