How to Turn a Negative Attitude Around

7 Tips on Cultivating Positivity in Your Life

by J.M. Troppello

I’ve mentioned in previous articles that I’m a glass half-full person. I always try to find the silver linings in circumstances. I think that outlook has served me well through the years.

“Negative thinking definitely attracts negative results.” – Norman Vincent Peale

I admit that it’s not always easy to turn a negative attitude around. Believe me, I’ve had bad days mixed in with the good ones. Yet, even when I’m having a bad day, somehow my spirit or mind sees something positive or latches onto a Bible verse I’ve read in the past. That comes to the forefront of my mind and spirit and helps me start to turn the train wreck of my day around.

I’m not saying that positive thinking can make you rich or heal sickness.

However, I’m saying that your positive or negative mindset will affect your behavior. If you’re so focused on negative things, that can stagnate you into depression—which can be very difficult to get out of.

When you focus on positive things, it’s easier for your 3-part being—body, soul, and spirit—to be motivated to do great things and contribute something worthwhile to this world. For example, with a positive mindset, you’re more likely to get up and work out than if you were negative and depressed. Exercising can increase your endorphins and boost your mood. That’s a cycle of positivity right there!

When you’re focused on negative things, you’re less likely to be motivated to accomplish tasks on your to-do list for the day. When you cultivate a positive mindset, you generally wake up refreshed and ready to accomplish great things that day.

If you want to turn around a negative attitude, consider implementing the following 7 tips on cultivating more positivity in your life.

1. Stop

Stop what you’re doing. Calm yourself down. Take deep calming breaths.

2. Assess

Identify what negatively affected you and caused this bad attitude.

3. Reset

Push the negative thoughts away and focus on positive things.

4. Connect

Reach out to a trusted friend or family member who can encourage you.

5. Consume

Read, watch, or listen to positive and life-affirming content.

6. Thank

Write down 3 things you are thankful for in that very moment.

7. Solidify

Don’t compare yourself to other people. Focus on embracing who you are.

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.” – Zig Ziglar

I watch The Kelly Clarkson Show on NBC and I love how she ends each show. This is paraphrased, but she says something to the effect of, “Have a great day, and if it’s not great—make it great.”

Basically, she’s saying that you have the power to choose to have a better day, even if your day is bad. It’s all about your attitude. Changing your attitude from a negative one to a positive one can significantly impact the trajectory of your day. Make today a good day!
