Marching Ahead Through Your Fear

How a Few Minutes with My Niece Impacted My Perspective

by J.M. Troppello

I went next door to chat with my sister for a bit. As I was about to leave, one of my young nieces said, “I need to show you something outside by your house.”

I said okay and followed her outside and walked to my house. Although, of course, we didn’t walk. My niece said we needed to march over there. I smiled and followed her lead. She brought me toward the stairs by our deck.

Then she pointed under the stairs and said, “Look, the ball went down there.”

I bent down and looked under the stairs. I saw a small, plastic, green ball.

She said, “We were playing over here the other day and the ball went under there. I was too afraid to go under the deck and get it.”

I said, “Okay. Let me get it.” I walked around the stairs and under the deck. I bent low and reached down and got the ball for her.”

She was very excited that I got the ball for her. Then she wanted me to march back to my front door to go inside while she marched back to her house. I said I would but had to go check the mail first.

She then decided to come with me, walking down the driveway. Since we’re neighbors, our mailboxes are next to each other’s – with our neighbor’s mailbox from across the street – by ours as well. Once we checked our mailboxes, she marched back to her house and waved goodbye.

God’s Got This

This encounter with my niece today made me think about how God is in control even when things seem out of control. He doesn’t want me to be afraid. When I am afraid, He wants me to trust Him to handle the stresses of life and comfort me.

Just like I helped my niece get the ball from under my deck because she was too afraid to get it herself, God will help me through all my fears.

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
(Isaiah 41:10, NKJV)

This is one of my favorite verses to remind myself of whenever I am afraid. I don’t have to fear anything because God is with me. Those aren’t just words. He truly is with me. When I focus on Him and not the fear, I can feel His presence surrounding me. When I focus on praising Him, I feel His peace and comfort. When I read His Word and remind myself of all His promises, I feel comforted, knowing that He is my God, and I shouldn’t be dismayed.

God can be your peace, comfort, and strength too. He wants to help you navigate through all the hills and valleys in your life. He wants to “uphold you with His righteous right hand.”

How do you handle times when you’re afraid? Have you ever experienced a time or times when God has comforted you through your fear?
