Tips on Increasing Your Goal Achievement Rate

Finding a Balance Between Success and Grace in Your Life

by J.M. Troppello

“A goal properly set is halfway reached.” – Zig Ziglar

I love that quote by Zig Ziglar. I completely agree with it. If you set your goals and create the right action plan, you’ll be more likely to achieve them.

I’m not sure if it’s because of my personality type or that I like to be organized, but I’ve always loved creating goals and writing them down. I love seeing things on a list. The satisfaction of crossing things off those lists is great.

“You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.” – Jim Rohn

Writing to do lists and goal lists with corresponding action plans helps me to stay organized so that I can become more productive and successful.

Sure, there are days when obstacles occur, or life gets in the way, and I don’t get everything accomplished on my list. However, that’s when I need to offer myself grace and not get too bent out of shape over it. There’s always tomorrow to start again on accomplishing goals on my to-doto lists.

Three Basic Types of Goal Categories

“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” – Jim Rohn

There are three basic types of goal categories: immediate, short-term, and long-term. Consider the following time frames for each of these categories of goals.

1. Immediate

These are goals that are immediate and up to three months.

2. Short-Term

These goals are generally from 3 months to 1 year.

3. Long-Term

These goals are usually from 1-5 years.

If you use these categories for organizing your goals, you can be one step closer toward increasing your goal achievement rate. Prioritizing the immediate goals helps you know what needs to be accomplished first. Setting short-term goals helps you to see where you’re headed in the future. Writing down long-term goals enables you to create the vision for where you want your life to be years down the road.

Increase Your Goal Achievement Rate

Writing down your goals within those timeframe categories is only the beginning of the goal achievement journey.

“All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.” – Orison Swett Marden

The following steps can help you implement the goal timeframe categories in your journey and increase your goal achievement rate.

  • Timeframe Categories – Write out your goals within the timeframe categories. This is more general information.

  • Action Plan – Create an action plan for each of your goals. This plan must be specific and include information like objectives, how to achieve it, projected obstacles, how to overcome them, people who will help you, resources you need to succeed, and how you’ll measure your success.

  • Support Team – You’ll need help along the way. This may come in the form of an accountability partner, professional colleague, or task-oriented app.

  • Research – Depending on how involved your goal is, you’ll need to research information that can help you succeed. Google will be your friend in this instance. Or if you’re old school, you may want to visit your local library.

  • Evaluation – Every good goal-oriented success plan includes a way to evaluate your success or failure. Some successes and failures will be more obvious than others. For more involved goals, you can set Key Performance Indicators (KPI) ahead of time. Those KPIs will help you with the evaluation process since you created them at the beginning as a way to measure success or failure.

“Set your goals high, and don’t stop until you get there.” – Bo Jackson

You are the master of your own destiny. Those words were not meant to be cliché here. You really have the power to succeed or fail in your life. Yes, obstacles will always come your way. However, it’s up to you whether or not you find a way to overcome them and succeed.
