Don’t Allow Limitations to Hold You Back in 2020

by Joanne Troppello

When you wake up each morning, do you think about the possibilities or the limitations that hold you back?

If you could wake up with the mindset that these limitations can’t hold you back—if you choose to overcome them—what would change in your life?

Maybe you’d feel free to accomplish more items on your to do list. You might believe in yourself more than before and step more easily outside your comfort zone.

Just imagine yourself to be a wild animal recently brought into captivity to be housed in a cage in a zoo. You’d likely act out defensively and want to escape your new caged home. You’d long for the freedom of being outdoors again.

Of course, the zookeepers would provide food, but you’d still probably growl and swipe at them whenever they brought your next meal. Yet, eventually there would come a turning point.

Getting Used to Your Captivity

After some time in the cage, you’d become acclimated to your new environment and get used to your captivity. Soon, you’ll act is if this is where you belong.

Your time in the wild will become a distant memory. You’ll begin to believe that this caged environment is where you were always meant to be—and that there is absolutely no way that you could ever escape.

Back to reality. You’re human. You’re not living in a literal cage. However, you may be living in a figurative cage that is holding you back from accomplishing everything you want to achieve in this new year.

You may have made some New Year’s resolutions. Yet, soon enough they will be forgotten, and you’ll lose that fire to fight back. You’ll settle for a mediocre lifestyle. I know that feeling of being inside a cage.

Breaking Free from Your Captivity

Whatever you find to do in life, I challenge you to think outside the box and break through your cage. Aren’t there things you’ve always wanted to do in life? Don’t you have dreams? Some of them that you think aren’t even possible for you to accomplish anymore? How sad is that, when we stop believing in our dreams.

1. Go Back to the Beginning

Take a step back and remember your why. What was it that used to get you motivated to accomplish your goals? If you truly want to break free from your limitations in 2020, you need to go back to the beginning and find that reason that made you love the start of a new day.

2. Create a Vision Board

Give yourself something to look at where you can visualize goals and where you want to be by the end of 2020.

Create a vision board so you can clearly define your why, your vision, and any affirmations that can help you get there.

Don’t make the board too cluttered. You need to be able to clearly see your why and your vision each day that you look at it.

Depending on your preferences, you may want to use technology instead of paper or a cork board. Check out this article from Pepper Virtual Assistant describing 5 vision board apps you can use. Some of the apps described include Dream Vision Board and Corkulous.

3. Create an Action Plan

A vision board can be a great motivator to look at each day. However, if you truly want to break free from your limitations in 2020, you should create an action plan to help keep you focused on the steps to take to meet your goals.

Of course, there are apps for creating an action plan too. Lifewire shared details on some of their top picks for these productivity apps and what they liked and didn’t like about them. Some apps they described are Strides, Way of Life, and Coach Me.

4. Get an Accountability Partner

Find a trusted friend or family member that you can share your vision board and action plan with. This person should be an encourager, but also someone who is not afraid to speak the truth in a constructive way.

This person can help you ascertain weaknesses that could hinder your progress of breaking free from your limitations in 2020. Your accountability partner can hold you accountable for following through on steps in your action plan. Throughout this process, they can remind you of your strengths and help you stay focused on your goals.

What has been limiting you in 2019? Are you ready to break free from your limitations in 2020? Following these four steps can help you accomplish your goals in this new year.
