3 Essential Oils That Can Help You Sleep Better

Getting a Better Night’s Sleep by Using Essential Oils

by J.M. Troppello

I have been using essential oils for several years now. Some of my favorites are lavender, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, clove, and patchouli.

“Self-care is an essential part of a healthy life. Essential oils figure in many at-home remedies to smooth the skin, soothe the spirit, and calm the mind.” – Amy Leigh Mercree, Essential Oils Handbook: Recipes for Natural Living

I add essential oils to roller bottles and use grapeseed oil as the carrier oil so that the concentration of the essential oil is diluted and can be applied to the skin. I also add essential oils to witch hazel and water and use them as body sprays.

One of my favorite things to do with essential oils is to use them in a diffuser. I have two diffusers. One is kept in the living room. I diffuse eucalyptus oil during the day. That aids in helping me to breathe easier due to allergy issues.

The other diffuser is kept in the bedroom. I add 3-5 drops of lavender oil to the diffuser with water. That helps to relax my husband and me and to promote better sleep. I have also added lavender oil to a spray bottle (with the witch hazel and water). I spray some on me when I get ready for bed.

If I am really amped up and need to relax, I do a combination of the three oils listed below: lavender, clove, and patchouli. You can use each separately to help promote peaceful sleep or use them together.

1. Lavender

According to, “Lavender can decrease anxiety, emotional distress, and pain perception.” Lavender is more commonly known to help with relieving stress than with the other two. Lavender essential oil is also effective in providing “antioxidant protection, natural treatment for diabetes, enhancing the mood, and supporting brain function.”

2. Clove

In the article 28 Proven Health Benefits of Clove in, the author stated the following: “Clove can relieve stress, anxiety, and help to improve sleep.” Clove can also be helpful “as an antimicrobial to kill bacteria, as a pain reliever for toothaches and muscle pain, for digestive issues, and to relieve respiratory conditions like cough and asthma.”

3. Patchouli

According to Dr. Axe, “Because patchouli oil is a sedative, it helps to treat insomnia.” You can also use patchouli for the “anti-inflammatory properties, pain relief, enhanced skin, and for weight loss.”

Get a Better Night’s Sleep with These Oils

“It doesn’t get much greener than essential oils: when used correctly, they are among Mother Nature’s most potent remedies.” – Amy Leigh Mercree, Essential Oils Handbook: Recipes for Natural Living

Use lavender oil, clove oil, or patchouli oil together or separately to help you get a better night’s sleep. You can use the essential oils in a diffuser with water, or in a roller bottle with a carrier oil like grapeseed oil, or in a spray bottle with water and witch hazel.
