Today is National Wear Red Day

by Joanne Troppello

Did you know that February is designated as American Heart Month? To come together to eliminate heart disease and stroke, our country supports National Wear Red Day which occurs on the first Friday each February.

This month, National Wear Red Day lands on February 7th.

The first American Heart Month occurred during February of 1964 when Lyndon B. Johnson was President. According to statistics reported by the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the cause of more than 17.9 million deaths annually. That number is estimated to rise to more than 23.6 million by the year 2030.

Approximately every 80 seconds one woman in the US is killed due to cardiovascular disease. That is a staggering statistic that should hit home with each of us.

If you would like to donate to the “Go Red for Women” movement—and help others by making them aware of the importance of this day and the American Heart Month—a matching gift from The American Heart Association will double the impact you’ll have.

The GO RED movement stands for the following:

1. Get Your Numbers

Make sure you get regular checkups with your medical provider to identify your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

2. Own Your Lifestyle

Begin living a healthier lifestyle by not smoking—and start exercising regularly, try to lose weight, and eat healthier foods. By doing these basic steps each day, you can do wonders for your health and well-being.

3. Realize Your Risk

Since heart disease kills one in three women, you should take this health risk seriously. Don’t procrastinate. Make sure to talk to your doctor today.

4. Educate Your Family

Working with your family can help make this process easier for starting to live a healthier lifestyle. When you and your loved ones work together and become motivators for you, making the right choices will be simpler.

5. Don’t Remain Silent Any Longer

Become a voice for yourself and all women. Share this message that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Make sure all your friends and family members hear this message and understand the point of National Wear Red Day.

Visit Go Red for Women today to learn more information which can change your life and the lives of those you know and love.
