The Anxiety and Depression Association of America reports that “anxiety disorders can be treated, but only 36.9 percent of those suffering receive treatment.”

If you suffer from anxiety, that can severely affect all aspects of your personal and professional life.

For anyone suffering from severe anxiety, it is important to seek help from a healthcare professional.

This article addresses 5 natural remedies that can help you deal with anxiety.

1. Green Tea

You may have heard that green tea is good for digestion and can help you lose weight. It’s also beneficial for calming stress levels. L-theanine is a water-soluble amino acid that is found in green tea leaves. Brain function is impacted as this amino acid moves through the “blood-brain barrier.”

As this happens, the L-theanine produces dopamine. This is effective in relaxing the body and “reducing sympathetic nervous system activation”—which occurs when you are anxious during stressful situations.

2. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is well-known for helping people relax. However, you may not know the reason why it is effective in calming anxiety. According to research completed by the University of Nottingham Medical School in the UK, chamomile can “significantly decrease anxiety and even fight depression.”

There are three hydroxylates—luteolin, bisabolol and apigenin—in chamomile that effectively relax blood vessels and loosen muscle fibers. These compounds become bonded to brain receptors and deliver the similar effect in the body as the drug valium.

3. Exercise

I’ve written several articles about the benefits of exercise for our physical and mental health. However, it is also beneficial for your emotional well-being. Exercising is effective in decreasing stress levels and anxiety. Your confidence level generally increases as you start to feel better when you lose weight and tone muscle.

Mood lifting brain chemicals called endorphins are released when you exercise. When people suffer from chronic bouts of depression, chemicals are released. If these people exercise, the release of those chemicals from the immune system is reduced. Exercise can have a calming effect on your body since core temperature rises.

4. Lavender

Drinking lavender tea or using lavender essential oil in a diffuser for aromatherapy or using it as a body rub can reduce stress levels. People have been using lavender oil for centuries to relax and calm anxiety.

Bring lavender tea with you to drink during the day in the office. If it is allowed—you need to check with management—diffuse lavender essential oil at your desk. Some people may not like the smells of diffused oil, so you need to ask for permission first, unless you have a closed-door office. However, check with management either way.

5. Passion Flower

The name passion flower may conjure ideas to help your romantic relationships. However, this tea acts like a natural sedative to reduce stress, anxiety, pain, and insomnia. This flower has similar effects of the drug valium.

Some sleep aids have powerful side effects that could cause drowsiness when driving and possibly cause addiction to the drugs. Taking passion flower to help calm down your anxiety and sleep does not have the same harmful side effects. Remember not to drink more than one cup if you are still at work. You don’t want to experience drowsiness.
