How to Stay Consistent with Your Workouts

Make a Difference in Your Physical Health with a Fitness Plan

by J.M. Troppello

I’ve worked out differently through the years. In my teens and twenties, I had a high metabolism, so I didn’t gain a lot of weight. I was actually underweight for some of that time period. I walked a lot and did yoga. Once I reached my forties, my metabolism significantly decreased, and I gained weight. I started exercising more regularly in my thirties and into my forties.

“Training gives us an outlet for suppressed energies created by stress and thus tones the spirit just as exercise conditions the body.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

I currently have a good fitness plan in place. I try to eat a healthy diet. I don’t deprive myself of some comfort foods like snacks and sweets. I eat things in a balanced way and ration my portions. For example, if I do have chips or pretzels as a snack, I put a specific amount in a container and then put the bag away. If I kept eating from the bag, I’d end up eating a lot more. To satisfy my need to snack later at night, I eat yogurt, granola, and fruit.

Since I started working out more consistently this year, I’ve started toning my muscles, improving my balance, increasing my flexibility, and have been regaining my core strength.

Consider the following 4 ways that you can stay more consistent with your workouts.

1. Fitness Apps

Use a fitness app to help yourself stay consistent with your workouts daily. I use the FitOn app and really love it. This app tracks the calories that I burn with each workout and how many workouts I complete. They have workouts like Pilates, yoga, weight training, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) like Tabata. You can add reminders to your calendar too.

2. Partner

Workout with a partner. You can do this by going to the gym together. You can also work out at home through video chat and use a fitness app like FitOn for shared workout videos. A workout partner can help you stay accountable to your fitness goals.

3. Calendar

Scheduling your workout times can help you stay consistent with your workouts. Use the calendar app on your phone to schedule your workout times. You can use the calendar app on fitness apps that you’re using so that you’ll get notifications to your phone.

4. Classes

Sign up for classes at your local gym. Working out at a scheduled weekly time—with others in the class—can help you stay consistent. Having an actual instructor there in person can encourage you to keep going and attend classes to reach your fitness goals.
