Black Leather Book
Reminder to the wayward soul
by Joanne Troppello
The stagnant air wrapped around him,
keeping him prisoner as he leaned
forlornly against rough tree bark.
His tattered shoes pushed the leather
book away from his spot on the grass.
The fading gilded lettering gracing the
cover attracted the sun’s light.
Yet, he defiantly nudged the book
further away from his view.
A gust of wind swept through the
grassy glen and beyond.
The rush of wind flipped open the
cover and riffled through the pages.
He furrowed his brow, still not looking
at the black leather Bible with
the white pages flapping in the wind—
urging his wayward soul to remember.
