Breaking Through
Longing for spring
by Joanne Troppello
I break through
shattering the ice with my head.
The cold water releases
me and I can breathe.
Breathe a frigid
blast when all I long for is a
calming breeze.
I pull myself up from
the hole, bare skin facing
the elements.
I look toward the forest,
naked of leaves,
while a tear sneaks out of my
eye only to freeze
on my cheek
and I long for Spring
when my ice will melt.
