Poetry Corner: Broken Beyond Repair

Abecedarian Poem

by Joanne Troppello

Anguished cries, anger rising

broken beyond repair.

Cannot believe our eyes

death and destruction surging.

Everywhere we look

families are hurting.

Good people searching

hard for answers.

Images flood our minds

jostling our memories.

Killing innocents

lost for no reason.

Mourning loss while

news cycles drone on.

Optimism lost,

pessimism taking over.

Quarantine life and

racism fueling tensions.

Something must change

to bring us together.

Unity seems far off,

vastly unreachable.

World needing more than

XO’s to heal the divide.

Yearning to be free,

zoneless and broken beyond repair.

I wrote this poem right about the time when the protests started after George Floyd was killed – and then the riots started. Yes, the poem has a bleak tone and doesn’t offer much hope.

However, I do have hope in the Lord.

Our Pastor recently started a six-week sermon series on the End Times. We’re half-way through the series. I’ve been learning a lot. I take notes during the sermon and review the notes and read over the scripture passages again during the week.

I especially liked what our Pastor shared this past Sunday that even though times are difficult and scary, God doesn’t want us to be afraid. He wants us to focus on Him and our future in Heaven.

That sounds simple, but it was exactly what I needed to be reminded of. I listen to the news and a few different conservative talk shows. I don’t spend a lot of time listening to those platforms. However, I want to stay informed about what is going on. I think it is important as a Christian.

Although, as our Pastor also said, if I don’t spend enough time reading God’s Word, praying, and worshipping Him each day—I won’t have the strength to endure until the end.

I’m Heaven bound and trusting God each day. What about you?
