Cement Crack
Worn through the years
by Joanne Troppello
Flaking off in a spider web design,
jagged edges making a whispered statement.
The crack flakes off, widening more each day.
A reminder of things not constant.
Hardened soles, rubber ones, pound
the pavement on their way to work and
school, day in and day out.
The crack makes its home in an old sidewalk,
worn with the years of pedestrian traffic.
They thought about recementing the walk
but it’s in an old neighborhood
and no one pays much attention
to the crack beneath their feet.
