Circling Light

Stars lighting the night sky

by Joanne Troppello

I watch the sun go down

slowly stepping out of the light of day

sliding out of the sky behind the hills.

Colors light the dimming sky

crimson, violet, yellow, and dark blues.

Splotches decorating the wind

when the sun sets.

Soon the colors darken

lending the moon a blank stage

upon which it illuminates

the stars’ way.

Minute stars wink nightly

sending messages to the moon,

in gratitude for the pale

light it sheds.

I watch the sun go down

colorful splotches follow in its wake,

moon slipping into the sky

stars lighting the stage.
