Faded Passport Photograph
Oma – my grandmother
by Joanne Troppello
I hold the small paper square in my hand,
old and faded, gray and white.
Her image stands out of the background,
youthful energy radiates
from eyes of hope.
The photograph is old without a glossy
finish, feeling as thin as paper.
To see my grandmother
as a young woman gives me pause,
wondering what it would
have been like to know her then,
a young married woman
in her thirties,
the mother of my mom.
