Rain in Slow Motion Staccato
A Cascade of Raindrops
by Joanne Troppello
I’ve learned to listen to the cricket’s song.
I sit here on a flower print quilt on the
bed by the window, ears attentive.
Rain falls in slow motion staccato,
companion to the cricket’s voice.
Rain tumbles down from the heavens
without thought to where it lands,
but its final resting place brings life.
Life to the dark rich soil and
bushes under the eaves.
It gives life to the patient
eavesdropper who pays attention.
I’ve learned to listen to the
cricket’s song.
A song of complacent silence
mingling with the hushed cascade
of raindrops covering the rocky ground.
