Seeing Her in a New Light
Photograph, May 1970
by Joanne Troppello
She plays with Tabby in the living room.
Her hands move the white string,
baiting the kitten.
Tabby’s black body stops and watches
with precision, arching her back
preparing to jump.
The kitten whacks her paw,
claws reaching for the string.
She picks Tabby up
hearing her contented purr as her
small body is lovingly stroked.
I look at this photograph
and see my mom in a new light.
She must have been
different, yet the same before
I was born.
I sit in similar fashion
and play with Taffy and Ginger today.
Taffy and Ginger are not Tabby
and yet they are.
Almost the same with mom and me.
