Spunky Tales: Spunky Gotcha Day, Seven Years Old!

by Linda Suit

For those that may not know why I live in Doodleville, a wee bit of history. I was widdle, lost, and alone. I couldn't find my squirrel Mommy and I was very scared. A hooman came close and I peeked over some bushes. I really needed him as a friend, so I was brave and climbed on his glove. Boy was he surprised! He talked to me but then he left, so I hid in the bushes again. Please come back. Yes, there he is! I was glad to see him cause I was really worried and it was getting late and I was hungry. He sat down, played, and talked with me. I tried to tell him he was nice but I really needed a Mommy. Oh no, he's leaving again. What will I do? I don't know how to take care of myself. Yes! Here he comes with a lady. I hope she's nice and wants me.

I ran from behind a tree and before she knew it, I was on her shoulder. I kissed her neck and sat on her head. She was really surprised I didn't bite her. We played for a bit but then she put me down and they walked away. No, please, you can't leave me, I'm all alone and I need a Mommy! She looked sad but kept walking, so I followed them.

I ran up her leg, into her arms and wouldn't let go. She looked at the man, then down at me and said, "Ok, Spunky, you can come home with us." Silly lady thought I was a boy at first! I lost my squirrel Mommy and that made me really sad, but how lucky am I to find someone to take care of me? Now I live in Doodleville with my hoomans and we have lots of Doodles that live outside. When I was widdle I snuggled with Mommy lots, and loved snoozing upside down in her robe.

Fast forward to my Gotcha Day celebration. Mommy's been singing to me all day. It has been seven whole crazy years since I found Jerry Boy. We're having a big party and my indoor and outdoor buddies all coming. Mommy made me a very special cupcake & put my favorite acorns on it, (she left the gooey stuff off mine). And for dinner guess what she's making? Sweet potato fries; nummy delicious they are!

In these last seven years, Mommy has learned lots of lessons. Here's one:

HOW TO CATCH A SQUIRREL in 101 "easy" lessons?

Lessons #2-101: Refer to Lesson #1

That was easy, huh? So, what's the problem here? I have my routine down pat. In the morning, I'm a lovebug...errr...Doodle. I stay in the kitchen and run and play all over my Mommy tree and do my widdle love bites and squirms all over her and on top of my chair. After a while I get tired and hungry, so I get fed lots of nummy stuff. Then I take a nap. Gotta save up energy for...

Warp speed, vrrroooommmm, back and forth all over the house, much to Mommy's dismay (that means she does not like some of the places I go). If I just happen to find a nut or acorn I hid, watch out, I am not going back to my Happy-tat until my mission is accomplished, meaning, hide it again. Why eat it? Mommy just gives me more. So, if Mommy happens to wanna catch me while I'm in warp mode, refer to Lesson #1.

But alas, I was finally captured and taken back to my Happy-tat cause it was dinner time. I was not happy when Mommy came in. All she could see was my tail sticking out of my basket. I was curled up with my acorn still in my mouth. She reached in to give me a love pet and I slapped her hand and growled at her. Sometimes I have a Squirrel-i-tude. Don't worry, I didn't bite. I finally put it down and came out for some good cuddles before bedtime. I laid my head on her shoulder, then under her chin while she kissed me and told me she wuved me, despite my orneriness. So, now you know how to not catch a squirrel. Oh by the way, you wouldn't want to catch one outside anyway cause they bite!!!!

Hey, one of these is not like the others! What's going on out there in Doodleville? Hmm, Juliet, you'd better watch it! She tried to butt the Doodles when they wanted the food Mommy threw out. Well, I guess she's hungry too, huh? I'm staying out of that food fight.

It's been almost seven years and I have a lot of friends young and old that wuv reading my stories. I even have conversations with them. Can you imagine people actually talking to a Doodle? Why of course they do! When I get discouraged with writing, someone will say, "Spunky, you are the only thing that brought a smile to my face today.” So you see, I was sent here for a special reason, to bring laughter, teach friends about life, and tug at your heartstrings. So many stories since that first day. What a trip this has been. The best thing about this whole wild ride is Mommy, Jerry Boy, and all of you friends (goaties too). I may be widdle but my heart is big cause I have so much love for you all. It's been a journey of fun, laughter, love, tears, scratches (and a few nibbles). I've learned to sing, play in my kitchen fort, climb my Mommy tree, cook, and have mastered the art of "pondering".

So, tune in next month for Springtime with Spunky Doodle! Until then, be good cause Doodles are watching you!
