Sunday Inspiration: Do You Consider Yourself a Doubting Thomas?

by Joanne Troppello

“Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25) Those are the words of Thomas, one of the twelve disciples.

Thomas had a difficult time believing that Jesus had risen from the dead. He wouldn’t believe it until he saw it for himself. What did he want to see? He wanted to see the wounds from the nails in Jesus’s hands and side.

Have you ever experienced such will-believe-it-when-I-see-it mentality in your own life?

I’m sure your answer is yes…at one point you did. I know I have. I’ve been a Christian for 31 years. I got saved at a young age. My journey with the Lord has been long. I’ve grown in my faith, but at times I still feel like a doubting Thomas.

Jesus beckoned for Thomas to place his fingers on the wound marks on his hands and feet. While doing that, he said, “Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” (John 20:27) Once Thomas touched Jesus, he then believed and knew it was really his Lord and Savior, risen from the grave.

However, Jesus then said to Thomas, “because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)

What does that mean to you today? In my mind, I picture Jesus looking lovingly at Thomas, but also a bit saddened that he didn’t believe without actually seeing him first. I’ve also pictured Jesus looking at me that same way…when I’ve lacked the faith to believe God for answers to prayer and His assistance helping me through difficult circumstances.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us that “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Taking a Step of Faith

God is pleased when we take that step of faith and believe that He is our Lord and will take care of us. He loves when we trust in Him with a childlike faith and don’t worry about our lives and how our needs will be provided for.

Are you having issues believing God for assistance at work, with family situations, in your home business, or any other issue?

The first step is to see God as bigger than the situation that you face.

God is God and in Job 42:2—“I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of yours can be withheld from you.” God is awesome. He has a plan for our lives (Jer. 29:11-14). Beginning to make a difference in your life begins with knowing that God is watching over you and He wants what’s best in your life.

Secondly, you need to have a dogged determination to continue to trust in God no matter what happens in your life.

Read God’s Word, memorize it and keep praying. Surround yourself with other believers so you have a good support system. Keep the vision alive in your life. God has so many great things in store for us if only we just believe.
